Work has commenced at the Lower Lea crossing, with vegetation clearance and the construction of temporary formwork now complete. Preparations are underway for the erection of formwork next week, which will take place ahead of the demolition works required for the installation of the new parapet. #civilengineering #construction #vegetation #formwork #demolition

Due to the torrential rain from Storm Boris, the A421 was closed as a result of severe flooding. Topbond was called in to carry out emergency works. It is estimated that a total of 105 million litres of water was removed from the site. At the peak of the flooding, a fleet of 36 articulated tankers was deployed to transfer water from the flood-affected area to other locations. Additionally, 16 over-pumps were set up in tandem, pumping water 4.5 km away to a lagoon at approximately 70 litres per second. Once the flood was cleared, all drainage assets were cleaned, and the filter drain media in the affected area was replaced. New pumps and generators were sourced to take over operations of the existing pump station, which was beyond repair after the flood. A contract lift was conducted to install this equipment, and continuous monitoring will remain in place until the permanent pump station is restored. The A421 has now been reopened. Another successful project completed in the Gorleston-on-Sea area The works involved constructing a block gravity retaining wall, doubling the size of the usable steps for improved safety, particularly at night. The local residents are particularly pleased with the outcome! Despite challenging site conditions, including protected steps and close proximity to the existing house, we delivered a great result. Another successful project completed by the Topbond team: Blakeney Footbridge. We were engaged by our client to replace the aging timber bridge, which had reached the end of its service life and required ongoing repairs. The new steel-framed design tackled the challenge of soft ground conditions for the foundations. The bridge spans 16 meters in length and 1.5 meters in width, with a gentle gradient to ensure accessibility for all users. Topbond was appointed by our client to carry out a series of essential works at Briggens Park. These included cleaning two gullies in the carriageway, reshaping all four embankments to a slope of 1:2, followed by laying Enkamat erosion control matting, seeding, and topsoiling. We also reinstated broken pipes and repaired brick head walls within the embankments, demolished and rebuilt all four wing walls of the culvert, and repaired the damaged hand railing along the embankments near the bridge approaches. Additional works included implementing scour prevention measures and refurbishing the brickwork at the culvert and brook invert, as well as tree removal and vegetation clearance. We've made excellent progress on our Isle of Grain project, with all grit blasting, concrete repairs, and fender installation successfully completed. As we transition into the final stage, preparations are in full swing for the arrival of the berthing aid system, which is expected later this week. Topbond recently completed the removal of sediment and sludge from the base of the Orwell Bridge in Ipswich, on behalf of National Highways and Ringway. The project involved clearing polluted sludge, sediment, debris, and consolidated silt from the chambers, with all waste materials disposed of at a licensed treatment plant. The work was executed using our 250-ton Jack-up barge, Topjack, supported by our two drainage tankers. Each pier chamber contains three cells, with a total capacity of 22 m³. Manual entry under confined-space conditions was required to remove the consolidated silt and debris. Due to the shallow water depth, access to the piers was restricted to daytime spring high water periods. The entire clearing operation was completed within four days. Last week, we finished removing the top extensions from Topjack’s legs, reducing their height from 36m to 24m in preparation for mobilisation to the Orwell Bridge, where we’ll be carrying out drainage work at the base of the bridge piers.
