🚴♀️ Exciting News for Westminster Cyclists! 🚴♂️ We're committed to making cycling safer and more convenient for our residents as part of our Active Travel Strategy. We’re excited to announce the successful installation of 250 secure cycle parking spaces across the city—a key milestone in supporting sustainable, active transport! 🌍💚 This achievement was made possible with the support of WSP and FM Conway Ltd, who helped install these hangars supplied by Cyclehoop. 🔐 Their forward-thinking design supports our vision of accessible, secure bike parking across Westminster.🔐 We were delighted to welcome Cllr Paul Dimoldenberg on-site to see the progress firsthand. His support has been essential to rolling out this initiative, underscoring our shared commitment to a greener, healthier Westminster. 🌿 Cycling is a fantastic way to reduce congestion, improve air quality, and promote active lifestyles. To all cyclists and those considering making the switch, take advantage of these new facilities, and let’s keep Westminster moving in the right direction!

The very worst bit of my job is when the phone pings telling me that someone has been killed or seriously hurt on London’s roads. It happens a lot. Last year, 95 people were killed and over 3,700 seriously injured. Every one of these incidents inflicts pain, suffering, tragedy and loss on victims, family members, friends, colleagues and communities. Heavy Goods Vehicles have been disproportionately involved in more fatal collisions with pedestrians and cyclists than other motor vehicles. When I started in this role 50% of cyclist fatalities and 25% of pedestrian fatalities involved collision with lorries. To make our streets safer and to meet the Mayor’s Vision Zero aim to eliminate all deaths and serious injuries from London’s roads by 2041, Transport for London and London Councils launched the world’s first Direct Vision Standard (DVS) in 2019. DVS involves measuring the amount of direct vision an HGV cab provides a driver and then ranks the trucks from 0* to 5* (5 being the most vision). In 2019, the 0* trucks needed to fit cameras and sensors to operate in London or face a £550 daily fine. This has significantly improved lorry safety and saved lives. In 2023, there was a 62% reduction in the number of fatal collisions involving an HGV, compared to 2017-19, as well as reductions in serious injuries. However, too many people continue to be injured. So today, we launched the second phase of this scheme. We’re tightening the safety standards of the DVS, so HGVs weighing more than 12 tonnes will need to hold at least a 3* rating, or fit a new safety system – with the latest technology – to operate in the capital. These important changes will further enhance the safety standards of HGV’s, reducing the risk of serious collisions and fatalities and making our streets safer for everyone. I would like to thank the team at TfL, the team at London councils, all the campaigners who have worked with us and the freight industry for their partnership in delivering this. Health and Safety is one of our core values, and today we were proud to support Transport for London with an event at our Mandela Way site, celebrating the launch of their latest safety standards. TfL's Direct Vision Standard (DVS), and its latest Progressive Safe System (PSS) update, makes sure the largest vehicles operating on the network can do so safely, with driver and technology working in tandem to pre-emptively predict and avoid incidents. The event today showcased two of our vehicles with the PSS upgrades, allowing key stakeholders from across TfL, the logistics industry and road safety charities, to see how this latest standard can support TfL's Vision Zero strategy, to eliminate deaths and serious injuries from the network. #TfL #SafetyStandards #DriverSafety #RoadSafety #FMConway #GreatPeopleGreatWork

We are proud to have had several of our colleagues participate in the inspirational ‘Ways of Life’ campaign from Highways Sector Council (HSC). The new campaign demonstrates the positive role highways play in our modern lives and the many opportunities there are for rewarding careers in the sector. To kick off the campaign, the HSC launched an engaging video which spotlights how highways are so intertwined with our daily lives, and that careers in this sector will have a vast impact on delivering a sustainable society for everyone. The video features a number of FM Conway colleagues, as well as our Carbon Analyst, Grace Prendergast, who provided a testimonial showcasing the breadth of career options available within the industry To find out more about highway careers, take a look at the HSC's ‘Ways of Life’ Campaign Video: https://lnkd.in/eisN-2eR #HighwaysUK #Transport #WaysofLife

Excellent site visit this morning to FM Conway Ltd to see their Dartford Recycling site and listen to Andy Summers and John Tobin talk about how they make high quality recycled aggregates from their own waste. They are certainly setting a very high standard for construction waste recycling for the industry! Fantastic that some of the Clancy E&S team were able to come along too and see it for themselves! FM Conway has extended its use of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) in its local and strategic highways operations, shifting away from diesel in its work to achieve net zero. HVO is a synthetic biofuel, made from re-used cooking oils and is completely fossil-free. It serves as a direct replacement for diesel and provides up to 90 per cent CO2 savings, as well as benefitting air quality through reduced nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions. We project the move will save around 3,000 tonnes CO2e through to the end of the current financial year. In April, FM Conway will assess the feasibility of making a permanent switch to HVO.
