Better health and care for all

About us

Our vision is better health and care for all. We are proud pioneers in integrating health and social care nationally. We passionately believe that the best way to care for people is by focusing on what matters to them, putting them at the centre of everything we do and integrating services around them. We believe that care as close to home as possible benefits everyone. Never has our vision been more important. The impact of COVID-19 has not only increased the pressure across all aspects of health and social care, but those who live in our most deprived coastal communities have seen an increasing gap in health inequalities. We provide health and social care services to our people in their own homes or in their local community. We also run Torbay Hospital (providing acute hospital services) as well as five community hospitals, stretching from Dawlish to Brixham. We support around 500,000 face-to-face contacts with patients in their homes and communities each year and see over 78,000 people in our A&E department annually. We serve a resident population of approximately 286,000 people, plus about 100,000 visitors at any one time during the summer holiday season. We are passionate about creating a fairer and more inclusive NHS for everyone. We employ over 6,500 staff, including doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, consultants, and physiotherapists, as well as highly skilled managers, administrators and technical experts. Our people work in a wide range of settings and locations across our communities, depending on their individual role or circumstances. We also have over 800 volunteers who make a difference every day to the people we care for and the services we provide. We were proud to be the first NHS Trust in England to integrate hospital and community care with social care. We know first-hand the positive impact that working together in partnership with others has on our local population – giving everyone a brighter future.

  • 👏 Congratulations to Abdul Alhassan, nurse at Dawlish Hospital who recently won an Our People Award! Adel Jones, Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer presented Abdul with the ‘we are always learning’ award. 🧡 Abdul was nominated for his knowledge and keenness to learn, his interest to teach, and his ability to turn to anything, at any time. Abdul is a keen advocate for learning. From supporting staff of all bands from daily tasks, to helping them develop in their chosen field of work, nothing is too much. Every patient who has met Abdul remembers his name, and it is always followed with the highest praise. Thank you, Abdul for always supporting your colleagues and our patients. • 💙 A huge thank you to the Torbay Hospital League of Friends for generously funding £12,400 for our new above patient bed boards, which are now up in wards at Torbay Hospital. Above bed boards are really important for patient care as they provide clear care requirements for patients, at a glance. All the information above each patients bed is individualised and specific to their needs, this will help the way we care for our patients. These new boards support our person-centred care agenda, and where possible, these boards are completed with patients and their families, to ensure we capture what matters most to our patients.

  • 📺 | Thank you to BBC Spotlight for featuring our incredible oncology and research colleagues and the wonderful Stephen, who was the first person in the South West to receive a personalised cancer vaccine as part of a new trial. The trial looks at creating a personalised vaccine specific to a person’s cancer, when markers have shown that there is a risk of the cancer returning. We are extremely proud of the work of our research and development teams and colleagues across the organisation who support research. Thanks to their work we can provide unique opportunities to local people while helping to further groundbreaking studies 💙
