How can social learning bridge the gap between conventional science and traditional ecological knowledge at local levels? This new publication by Mzukisi Kuse, Shanna Nienaber, Mahlodi Tau, and Dan'sile Cindi (MBA) asks that question and explores the crucial role of social learning in managing South Africa’s Strategic Water Source Areas (#SWSAs) 💧 The authors draw attention to the SWSAs - these supply a disproportionate amount of water and are vital for the country’s water security, supporting 60% of the population, over 90% of urban users, and 70% of irrigated agriculture. But governing these areas comes with complex challenges that need more than just technical solutions. 💡 The publication highlights The Living Catchments Project, showing how social learning processes can strengthen SWSA governance through collaboration and community engagement. The authors emphasize the need to build social capacities and foster long-term collaboration to better navigate the complexities of these vital water source areas. 🔍 For more details and to access the full publication, check out our website #NewPublication #SWSAs #SocialLearning #Sustainability #SouthAfrica

Innovation for Transformation
About us
Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium (TIPC) is a multi-country initiative dedicated to how policymakers, academics and funding agencies can orientate science, technology and innovation towards transition and a more sustainable future. Members aim to transform socio-technical systems for meeting societal needs, with the aims of: - redirecting the narrative for Science, Technology and Innovation policy away from a focus on economic growth towards a focus on the SDGs and transformation; - building demonstrators/experiments to explore how to approach, implement and evaluate Transformative Innovation Policy; and - generating a network of people and organisations working from transformative perspectives globally. Agencies invest in a shared infrastructure and substantive programme of work that includes experimentation, research, training and strengthening of capacity – underpinned by regional Hubs, the development of open-access learning and resources and a growing knowledge community. Members and bilateral policy partners have included: - Business Finland - Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development - Council for Scientific and Industrial Research – Science and Technology Policy Research Institute, Ghana - Department of Science and Innovation, South Africa - Ministry for Higher Education and Research, Senegal - Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Colombia - National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation, Kenya - National Council of Science and Technology, Mexico - National Research Foundation, South Africa - National Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation, Panama - The Research Council of Norway - Vinnova, Sweden TIPC is coordinated by the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex Business School, in partnership with regional Hubs, the Joint Research Centre of the Spanish National Research Council and Polytechnic University of Valencia and the Utrecht University Centre for Global Challenges.

On 22 October, TIPC ’s Co-Director, Matías Ramírez joined a panel on ‘Building Bridges to Implement the New Biodiversity Plan’ at the conference of the Parties (#COP16) for the Convention on Biological Diversity, organised by UN Biodiversity. This event has been held in #Cali, Colombia 🇨🇴. Alongside key speakers like Peru’s Vice Minister Raquel Hilianova Soto Torres, Matías presented a pivotal report from Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium (TIPC)’s Latin American and Caribbean hub in collaboration with the Wyss Academy for Nature. 📌 The report highlights how industrial-scale logging, agriculture, and energy production have created a destructive cycle of deforestation in the Amazon. This threatens to reach a tipping point that could lead to large-scale ecosystem collapse. The findings call for transformative approaches to manage the Amazon, prioritizing place-based solutions over traditional system optimization ♻️ 🌳The COP 16 Conference marks the first major gathering since the Kunming- Montreal Biodiversity Framework, highlighting the crucial role of local, innovative solutions in tackling deforestation. TIPC’s involvement underscores the importance of innovative, community-driven solutions in achieving those goals. 🐝 🔗 Read more about the report and access the publication on our website. #COP16 #Biodiversity #TIPC #UN #TransformativePolicy

We’re excited to share that Matías Ramírez, TIPC Co-Director, will attend the 16th Conference of the Parties (#COP16) for the Convention on Biological Diversity organised by UN Biodiversity in #Cali, Colombia, starting October 20th. He'll join the panel ‘Building Bridges to Implement the New Biodiversity Plan’ 🌿 During the conference, Matías will present a pivotal report from Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium (TIPC) Latin American & Caribbean hub, in collaboration with the Wyss Academy for Nature. The report emphasizes the critical risks of continued deforestation in the Amazon—highlighting the need to shift from traditional "system optimization" approaches to new transformative pathways 💡 This includes understanding the Amazon's diverse ecological contexts and empowering local communities. COP 16 marks the first time global stakeholders have come together since the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in December 2022. TIPC’s invitation is a testament to our impactful contributions to the biodiversity dialogue through the lens of transformative innovation 🤝 📚 Read more about the report and access the publication on our website #COP16 #Biodiversity #TIPC #TransformativeChange #NewPublication

Dr Tshepang Mosiea, Chief Director at the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) in South Africa, analyses the challenges and prospects for South Africa on its path to inclusive growth driven by innovation🌱 ✏️“The hard reality is that South Africa ranks first globally in terms of inequality. While this might be seen as a disadvantage, it also presents an unparalleled opportunity for us to use innovation to address the disparities”, he notes. The publication discusses Living Labs and drone technology. These initiatives empower young people and unemployed graduates to provide essential services, invigorating local economies. 🔍 Dr. Mosiea also emphasizes that “innovation cannot exist in a vacuum. We must also focus on transforming existing sectors of the economy, such as agriculture, tourism and mining, by using innovation to create opportunities for marginalised groups,” reminding us that no one must be left behind on this vital journey. Earlier in September, in collaboration with the Deep Transitions Lab and Eu-SPRI Forum, the Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium (TIPC) gathered 150 policymakers, private investors, and academics for Engagement Week in #Barcelona earlier this month. Hosted by the Government of Catalonia, it brought together experts from over 30 countries, centred around the theme ‘Scaling Experimentation: A Catalyst for Transformative System Change’. Through thought-provoking learning workshops 💡, expert panels, insights and experiences from various regions of the world, public and private actors worked side-by-side to explore novel strategies for long-term solutions 🤝 Professor Johan Schot, TIPC co-founder, highlighted, “Public and private actors may operate under different models, but both are committed to creating meaningful change. Business as usual is no longer feasible, and this event helps us harness our strengths to accelerate transformation.” 📢 The launch of the European TIP Hub (TRIP-EuHub), a new initiative connecting research organisations and governments across Europe for innovation and capacity building. 🔗 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/e2cbBaah #TIPC #TransformativeInnovation #Collaboration #TRIPEuHub #InnovationPolicy

At the tail end of last week I was in Barcelona for a conference organised by the Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium (TIPC) (pronounced as if a bit drunk, 'tipsy') and the Deep Transitions Lab. It was a rich experience and I have many reflections. So many that it gets its own WeekNote. Huzza! This week covers: ANNOUNCEMENT Influential Trajectories: invitation to test a user's guide THE CONFERENCE -Introduction -Second Deep Transition: like the Industrial Revolution, only more so. -Focusing on degrowth or postgrowth is a serious mistake. -Lessons from TIPC initiative: Field-building -Global finance: can neoliberalism's enforcer become sustainability's enabler? -Where's the cultural / worldview / ontological layer? -What next? For the folks I met there, including Victoria Shaw, Jess Daggers, PhD, Caesar Alpha Irawan. Alison Paton, Katie Miller, Jenny Sjöblom, Rowan Conway, Bipashyee Ghosh. https://lnkd.in/eyGwBYTg
