Artist and the Machine's Virtual Beings NYC edition was really special 😍 Thank you to my co-host Natalie Monbiot (HourOne), our brilliant speakers Jamie Metzl (renowned author & futurist), Jake Becker (Genies), Micah Gantman (Butterflies AI), Pindar Van Arman (renowned artist/collected by Lacma), Sam Hosovsky (uCat). My wheels are turning, we learned so much 🤯 Some key takeaways: 🎨 LACMA-collected artist Pindar Van Arman highlighted how his 20-year journey with AI started with creating a robotic painting assistant and a reflective process with his machines. Throughout his journey, he discovered that AI can produce results that augment his artistic hand and take on their own creative input, but that the importance still relates to the human being behind the artwork and the meaning assigned to that human. 🤖 Jake Becker of Genies touched on the ability of avatars not only to be a form of self-expression and a mode to connect with fans, but also as a solution for talent to scale their impact and manage their personal time, as they transcend the limitations of the human body. For example Jamie Metzl and Natalie Monbiot use their AI twins to communicate in languages they don't speak, like Korean and Arabic, and to represent them in digital conversations. 🦋 Micah Gantman from Butterflies AI on how creating virtual avatars allows people to explore different versions of themselves across various universes. AI Avatars with memories and backstories create an opportunity for users to explore new identities, tapping into a psychological and emotional connection with their virtual selves. ⚡ Jamie Metzl raises a fascinating idea about AI offering collective human wisdom. By analyzing all human history and interactions, AI systems may eventually propose organizing principles for humanity that, much like religious tenets, could guide us in optimal ways of living and interacting. 🌐 We are just scratching the surface when it comes to virtual beings and digital twins. AI is opening doors to unsupervised, dynamic avatars that evolve based on interactions with humans and their environment. As Jake Becker pointed out, these avatars are becoming essential to the future of gaming, mixed reality, and social platforms. Gen Alpha already spends 21% of their leisure time in social gaming environments, making these AI avatars central to how we will socialize and learn in the future. 🤝 Ethical considerations are increasingly important. With great power comes great responsibility. Platforms are prioritizing safety by implementing robust moderation systems, and attributing responsibility back to the human creator of these virtual beings.
