This Tuesday was the anticipated final of our BariStar and BakeStar competition! This year, we introduced a new bakery section and a plant-based theme, taking the event to the next level. In two exciting heats, the finalists battled it out for the titles of Lexington’s BariStar and BakeStar 2024. The evening was packed with innovation, creativity, and the spirit of friendly competition. And now, the winners… BakeStar ⭐️🍰: Tim Fisher, with his standout creation: Apple, Cobnut, Vanilla & Caramel Tart—a tribute to British ingredients featuring layers of sweet pastry, British apples, cobnut dacquoise, vanilla cream, caramel, and cobnut brittle. BariStar ⭐️☕️: Samantha Polmear, with her signature Banana Bread Latte—taking inspiration from Australia, where banana bread and coffee are the perfect match. A huge thank you to our guest judges Graham, Claire, and James, as well as our site mentors and amazing suppliers Pact Coffee, UCC Coffee UK and Ireland, Town and Country, WBC, Minor Figures, DDP, and Vegetarian Express for all your support throughout the competition and for joining us on the night. Of course, we also want to give a big shoutout to our incredible contestants! Their creativity, hard work, and dedication were truly outstanding, and it was clear in everything they brought to the table on the night. Lastly, we’re proud to highlight the cause behind the competition — raising funds for Project Waterfall, helping bring clean water to coffee-growing communities. Congratulations again to our BariStar and BakeStar 2024 winners Tim and Samantha! ⭐️🏆

It is well and truly Pumpkin Spice Season! The 'Pumpkin Spice' effect has rippled across cafés and coffee shops since it's introduction to the UK in 2003. Remarkably, the pumpkin spice market has a compound annual growth rate of 10.2% and is expected to grow from $1.1 billion in 2023 to $2.4 billion by 2031! Love it or hate it, Pumpkin Spice is here to stay and coffee businesses could get left behind if they don't keep up with customer demand. In Ethiopia, 51% of the rural population still don't have access to clean water. This project was carried our by Project Waterfall's delivery partner WaterAid, with the aim to reach 24,500 people by 2018 in one rural and one urban ward of Chelia district (Liben Gamo and Babich Town) and one rural ward of the Toke Kutaye District (Toke Kombolcha). These areas have the poorest rates of access to water and sanitation services in the area. Before the work began, the communities would draw water from polluted rivers up to three hours walk away which are shared with livestock. This project brought safe water to 24,500 people and improved sanitation to 22,000 people. This will transform the communities, improving their health and life chances and providing the first building block for development. To mark #UKCoffeeWeek, we are sharing some of the recent projects that our donations to Project Waterfall have helped to fund. Since 2016, UCC has donated over £170,000 to support clean water projects in coffee farming communities. *Data Project Waterfall. #UKCoffeeWeek #ProjectWaterfall #UCCcoffee

The capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, is a critical link in the country’s coffee supply chain and a major hub for coffee exchange and exportation. Over the past decade, Addis Ababa has experienced rapid population growth and as a result there are roughly 100,000 children in Addis Ababa who live on the street. The water the children have access to is often contaminated, causing diseases. This is the second leading cause of death in Ethiopia. Project Waterfall partnered with Splash International, who provide lifesaving water, hygiene and sanitation to schools and orphanages in Addis Ababa. This project brought clean drinking water to the Kibebe Tsehay Orphanage, giving children access to safe, clean water. What an amazing project and incredible work from our friends at Project Waterfall! To mark #UKCoffeeWeek, we are sharing some of the recent projects that our donations to Project Waterfall have helped to fund. Since 2016, UCC has donated over £170,000 to support clean water projects in coffee farming communities. #UKCoffeeWeek #ProjectWaterfall #UCCcoffee

Clean Water for Schools is one of the projects that Project Waterfall has been supporting, with help from UCC's donations. It is a five-year programme carried out by Project Waterfall's partner, WaterAid UK, addressing the urgent need to improve poor water, sanitation and hygiene conditions common to many schools in sub-Saharan Africa. Without access to clean water in schools, children will often spend 1-2 hours of each school day walking to collect water, which is often unsafe to drink. Access to a clean water source in schools means children can spend more time focusing on education, and improved hygiene leads to less disease, increased attendance and increased performance. The result? Economic growth and a brighter future for whole communities.
