About us
Located within the UCL Faculty of Laws, the Centre for Access combines innovative teaching methods and research based learning with the provision of pro bono legal advice to vulnerable communities, predominately in the areas of social welfare, housing, and education law. UCL is unique in its incorporation of casework and social justice awareness into the law degree programmes we offer. Working in partnership with charity organisations and legal professionals, the Centre provides legal assistance to members of the local community while giving students an opportunity to gain hands on experience in meeting legal needs. Understanding the broader implications that a lack of access to justice can have, we take a holistic approach to resolving the legal problems our clients face. Aims The central mission of the Centre is to promote access to justice. This is achieved through four core objectives: To provide legal assistance to members of the local community who would otherwise be unable to afford it To engender an awareness of social justice issues in our students To implement innovative teaching and learning methods To develop our students’ ethical and professional awareness Our objectives are achieved through projects which focus on: Provision of Free Legal Advice and Representation Clinical Legal Education Student Engagement & Community Service Research Partnerships with External Organisations

We won!! Just so so proud of Marcia Thompson and her work with the incredible and tireless team at UCL CAJ especially Rachel Knowles who's brainchild this was. We love working the you and Clyde & Co - this elegant solution to the lack of form filling capacity in Newham has seriously sped up processes of getting support, and enabled us to bring Magpie Project family centred and trauma aware working together the the might and capacity of two major organisations. Incredible stuff. Thank you.
Delighted to say that our form filling project with the phenomenal The Magpie Project and Clyde & Co won best new Pro Bono project at the LawWorks Pro Bono Awards. Had a wonderful evening celebrating all the fabulous pro bono projects and catching up with old friends.

Mentor Call Out! I'm currently helping re-launch UCL Centre for Access to Justice's Public Interest Mentor Scheme and would love to recruit a few more mentors to help guide our students in their initial steps towards a career using the law for good. We have really diverse sets students with a wide variety of interests and so would love to be able to draw on a similar pool of mentors. We don't necessarily even just need those in practice; it would also be great to hear from those in law-adjacent policy and advocacy roles too. The Scheme is relatively low commitment; we just ask that you're able to meet your mentee (virtually or in person) three times between January-June and potentially look at a couple of applications, all with whatever supervision you need from us at CAJ. If you think you might possibly be interested in helping a student, please get in touch and I can tell you more!

Tonight our Projects Coordinator, Ram Sabaratnam was awarded the Sir Stephen Wall Inspiring Role Model Award at the UCL Inclusion Awards. During his time at UCL Faculty of Laws, Ram has gone above and beyond to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all students. The community he has fostered is a testament to his incredible ability to make students feel comfortable and engaged. He has made a tangible difference to so many students and we couldn’t be more proud that his contributions are being recognised in this way. Congratulations Ram!

Delighted to have Bayode A. and our other Fellows joining this year’s Summer Fellowship Programme! We are really proud of our programme which supports students wishing to pursue public interest careers, ensuring that they are appropriately remunerated while doing so. Our fellows also play a really important role supporting the UCL Integrated Legal Advice Clinic (UCL iLAC) making sure we can continue supporting clients year round.
I am excited to announce that I have been accepted onto the UCL Centre for Access to Justice Summer Fellowship. Thank you to Ram Sabaratnam, Shiva Riahi and Thul Khan for this opportunity, and to everyone who has supported me during the application process. More importantly, I’m grateful to God for being a constant source of strength. I look forward to further exploring my interests in social welfare law and access to justice during the internship.

Delighted to speak on a panel tonight with the wonderful Stephen Mayson and Laura Pinkney. It’s no lie to say we had a genuinely interesting discussion about regulation and its role in promoting access to justice. Great to catch up with James Sandbach and Mavis Maclean - and really delve into the question of whether it’s time time to recalibrate the relationship between regulation and access to justice. The audience (& panel) overwhelmingly thought Yes. Thank you to UCL Centre for Access to Justice and Rachel Knowles for bringing us together to discuss this important topic. https://lnkd.in/eJXqyzhJ).
