  • Throughout November, we will be highlighting men's health and how UHBW promote health and wellbeing for all our colleagues! Despite being equally affected by mental health issues, men are statistically less likely to seek help or open up about their struggles. Let's look at the facts: - Globally, men account for over 75% of deaths related to mental health - In many countries, men are four times more likely to experience fatal outcomes from mental health struggles than women - Only 36% of mental health therapy patients are male, which means a large percentage of men are silently facing these challenges alone We're proud of offer free wellbeing and mental health support to all our colleagues. • Meet two-year-old Parker Green, the 300th patient to undergo innovative surgery performed by the same consultant who first introduced it to Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. Parker was diagnosed with an obstruction in his kidney. If left untreated, it could have caused a loss of kidney function. His operation was the 300th time Consultant Mark Woodward has performed laparoscopic kidney surgery at the hospital. He first introduced it in 2005 when it was still a relatively new procedure in paediatrics. The intricate keyhole surgery involves making small incisions on the patient’s back. In Parker's case, a small section of the blocked tube is removed and then sewn back together. Mark Woodward said: “Perhaps surprisingly, removing the whole kidney is the simplest laparoscopic kidney operation, whereas the surgery Parker needed is the trickiest. Removing an obstruction involves quite fiddly sewing but you do get quicker with experience.” Following his operation earlier this month, Parker is recovering well and getting back to his playful two-year-old self. Since 2005, the department has expanded and now includes three more paediatric urologists. Between them, more than 500 laparoscopic kidney surgeries have been performed at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.
