This Charities & Partners Week, we’re highlighting the The Civil Service Retirement Fellowship (The CSRF) an organisation dedicated to supporting retired Civil Servants through befriending services, community groups, and advice networks. For over 60 years, CSRF has ensured that those who spent their careers serving others continue to receive the support they deserve and being part of a friendly community and connecting with each other. Meet Olive Walter, a lifelong public servant who shaped child protection policies, mentored future generations, and continued giving back even in retirement. Her journey is a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of public service. Through CSRF, retired Civil Servants like Olive stay connected and supported. Yesterday, a major public sector reform milestone was reached as the Procurement Act 2023 came into force. With streamlined processes, stronger payment terms, and a central digital platform for finding contracts, the Act opens up greater opportunities for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprises (VCSEs) to work with the public sector. Capitalising on the UK’s excellence in science and innovation is a key part of driving growth under the government’s Plan for Change, and the Act offers greater scope for public sector bodies to source more innovative solutions. Sam Rowbury, Cabinet Office Director, Commercial Policy said: “For the Government Commercial and Grants Function team behind the Transforming Public Procurement Programme, this (the Act) represents the culmination of four years’ intensive work on this key part of public service reform. “The team has guided and supported procurement practitioners and suppliers from right across the public sector through this change - from the initial Green Paper consultation, to shaping and steering the Procurement Bill through 70 hours of Parliamentary debates, securing Royal Assent and then implementing the reforms. “Implementation has meant leading the commercial profession through a comprehensive programme of learning and development comprising official guidance, familiarisation videos, a certified e-learning course for 25,000 practitioners, and three-day, intensive ‘Deep Dive’ training for advanced practitioners. A vibrant Community of Practice has been created with regular sessions to allow practitioners to share knowledge, best practice and ask questions.”

Meet Megan Wingfield a PR and Communications Apprentice at the Serious Fraud Office (UK) Fraud Office (UK) who, after graduating with a degree in Forensic Psychology, took the plunge with an apprenticeship with the SFO’s communication team. One year on, she reflects on her experience. “I’ve never enjoyed traditional education, but being able to apply what I’ve learnt through hands-on experience has completely changed my perspective,” Megan shares. “I have been able to experience in depth the many disciplines of communications which I would not be able to do in a permanent position, and in doing so I’ve discovered a love for internal communications, a career path I had never considered before.” The Communication Team at the SFO plays a vital role in the organisation supporting investigations through campaigns that reach victims and whistleblowers, sharing information about our prosecutions with media and stakeholders to prevent future criminality, and ensuring a diverse body of staff have the information they need to do their job. Megan’s journey demonstrates the value in government apprenticeships and how they provide support and tools needed for individuals to thrive in a dynamic environment. #NationalApprenticeshipWeek2025
