Ultrabeam is a multi-award-winning company specialising in high-definition marine survey and asset inspection.

About us

Ultrabeam is a multi-award-winning company specialising in high-definition marine survey and asset inspection. The company was established in Spring 2018 by Andy McLeay and Gabriel Walton, who share over 45 years of combined experience in coastal and offshore surveys. The company was formed to service the inshore survey market by providing high quality hydrographic and geophysical services to a wide range of clients from ports & harbours, utilities, offshore renewable energy, oil & gas and public sector industries. Using a fleet of advanced survey-grade Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs), Ultrabeam surveys a variety of assets including harbours and quay walls, bridge structures, subsea cables and pipelines, offshore wind and oil and gas platforms. The bespoke systems allow for superior data acquisition even at slow speed and feature a range of benefits including Dynamic Positioning, extended battery life and a large payload with simultaneous sensor mounting. Ultrabeam provides an unparalleled level of accuracy and detail through the use of specialist highly innovative survey tools and techniques. The Ultrabeam difference is in our data supported by our many years of shallow and deepwater survey experience. We see our work as a distinct specialism and rather than overlapping from a core land survey company or being an appendage to a large offshore survey company Ultrabeam is entirely focused on ultra-high-resolution coastal survey and delivery of outstanding high-quality data.

    An interesting example...

WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE? This type of sediment mobility wasn’t something that we had previously seen in rivers here at Ultrabeam. These examples show some results from a high resolution bathymetric survey around a highway bridge that we did in the same river 2 years apart. The two surveys were conducted in an identical fashion, first in 2021 and then later in 2023. The data that caught our interest was the Red/Blue plot of the riverbed. This is a calculated surface that shows the difference in the riverbed levels between 2021 and 2023. The red areas show where the riverbed has lowered down, and the blue areas show where the riverbed has raised up. The plot clearly shows how the sediments that form the riverbed are mobile and are moving downstream in a wave shaped bedform. The waves also appear to be moving slower towards the banks, due to the lower current speeds and increased friction, and faster in the central portion of the river, where current speed is highest. Q: But why is this interesting from an engineering point of view? A: Because one day your foundations could be more or less exposed than on another, and the cycle of wave peaks and troughs just keeps moving downstream.
