The second of my two short articles has been published this month in the magazine Dartmoor News, both talking about out our digital heritage projects across that gorgeous part of the UK (I'm biased!). This time, it's my first write-up of one of my all-time favourite projects, describing how we rediscovered the WWII anti-torpedo net remains on the bottom of Burrator Reservoir by using VR to interpret the high-definition sonar output from an autonomous surface vessel deployed at the Reservoir over two occasions, courtesy of our friends at Swathe Services. The article also describes the research and public engagement that went into the project before we were able to justify seeking permission to dive two of our small ROVs and to record the nets and spheres in situ. People can now see the ROV video footage and the VR-recreated bottom topography at the Burrator Discovery Centre, courtesy of a PC we donated a couple of months ago.
