📢 “I asked The House a simple question - do we turn a blind eye to modern slavery in our energy supply chains, or do we lead the way with a just transition?” Exciting to hear Sarah Champion MP's powerful speech yesterday during the Great British Energy Debate. 👏 In her speech she stresses that the time for meaningful action is now. With new laws to protect people from modern slavery including forced labour in supply chains in the US, EU, Canada and Mexico, the UK is lagging behind. We've long called for human rights to be respected in energy supply chains, so it’s promising that the Secretary of State, Ed Miliband, has committed to make sure that the government's clean power mission is free from forced labour. We look forward to working to help the UK shift from trailing behind to setting a global example in the transition to renewable energy. We need stronger laws to protect the people behind the products we buy—across all businesses. Without this, the UK risks becoming a dumping ground for goods made with forced labour. The government must urgently pass legislation to ensure UK company and public sector supply chains aren't tainted with exploitation. #GreatBritishEnergy #ForcedLabour Unison Business & Human Rights Resource Centre
