  • As a United Teaching trainee, you'll be supported by several mentors through your training year and beyond. Each acts as a 'critical friend', helping you to become the best you can be. • Early career teacher Benedict has been leading a STEM project at his school, helping students to build a racing kart from scratch. 💪 “I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the determination, responsiveness, creativity, and problem-solving skills of my students as they embarked on the ambitious project. From sketching blueprints to assembling components, this project has been more than just nuts and bolts; it has been about teamwork, resilience, and innovation. 🏎️ “Projects like these are so important because they inspire students to explore careers in engineering, technology, and beyond. I was so happy when a student said to me 'Mr Ogbogo, I have decided to become an engineer because I have been able to develop technical and problem-solving skills which I would love to transfer to my career.' 🏁 “Seeing my students push through challenges, refine their designs, and celebrate their successes has reaffirmed my passion for teaching. We are almost done and the race day is coming up in May. I really can’t wait!” #BritishScienceWeek #BSW2025

  • For #WorldBookDay, get to know trainee English teacher Amelia 👨🏫 📚 "I chose to teach English because you get to teach such a wide variety of things creatively and critically. Every time you study a new novel or play; you're learning about the historical and social context." 📖 “My favourite book is The Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin. It’s a traditional, young adult magical fantasy adventure about a young man who discovers he's a wizard. His biggest obstacle is himself and and he has to overcome his own inner demons. I really enjoyed that the story is resolved without violence and I really admire the exploration of what heroism can be. I think it's a fantastic, very nuanced, and thoughtful story.”

  • Teaching is a welcoming profession, open to people from all different walks of life. Before deciding on a career change, English teacher Lucie worked in publishing as an editor specialising in historical fiction and memoirs — helping people from MPs and GPs to celebrity stylists to tell their stories in the best way possible. 📚 “One of ‘my’ authors kindly wrote in his acknowledgements: ‘For Lucie, who really understood what I wanted to say and helped me to say it’. This became the opening line of my application form to be an English teacher. I realised that I had developed a skill for helping people tell their story and, in a post-pandemic world where so many children were struggling to make sense of the world and re-integrate into school, I felt this skill could be used in supporting them through their school journey. 🎨 “Prior to editing, I worked for 10 years in the art market organising large-scale events in London and New York. I gained plenty of skills from previous jobs that are all relevant when teaching — time management, working to a deadline, communicating effectively, and learning and navigating new systems and procedures. 👩🏫 “The training year was tough but the support was fantastic. Ultimately, when a student suddenly ‘gets it’ after you’ve tried to explain it, or a monosyllabic teenager gives you a Christmas card with an awkward message of thanks written inside, it all becomes worth it.” #NationalCareersWeek #NCW2025
