The prevention of cruelty to animals, the relief of suffering in animals and the advancement of animal welfare. 🐾

About us

The Ulster Society Prevention Cruelty to Animals (USPCA) is the second oldest Animal Welfare Charity in the world. Founded in 1836 as the Belfast SPCA it’s first priority was to challenge the abuse of working horses, a daily occurrence on the Victorian city streets. The purpose of our founders to ‘Prevent Cruelty and Relieve Suffering’ remains as the driving force for our Charitable activities. We offer a range of charitable services which includes, our Social Re-homing and Pet Pledge Scheme, the USPCA Animal Hospital, Pet Food Parcels and Animal Cruelty and Crime Investigations. The USPCA receives no government funding and therefore relies on voluntary donations from the public. It is through the kindness and generosity of people that thankfully we are still here to protect all animals in Northern Ireland. At the USPCA our love and passion for animals reflects greatly in each employees work, from our vets to our volunteers and this is something we are extremely proud of. After 355 days in our care, we are happy to say that Sybil finally found her forever home! Doesn't she look chuffed to bits?🥰🙌 Sybil did not have the best start in life, as she was found as stray by a member of the public and was brought to us for help as she had only recently given birth. After spending time with our veterinary and animal care teams, it was found that she was FIV+ which meant this special kitty needed a special home. Sybil watched so many cats come into our centre and go off to their new homes. Cats who are FIV+ are often overlooked due to misconceptions about the condition, but there is no reason why they can’t still live a full and happy life!😺 As Sybil’s one year anniversary of being cared for by the USPCA was quickly approaching, we were over the moon when the right family finally found her and as you can see, Sybil was so happy to be heading home with her new owners!❤️ When you choose to #AdoptDontShop you are giving animals like Sybil a second chance of finding the love and happiness they deserve.🐾 Adopt a rescue animal 👉 https://buff.ly/4c7NeZh #AnimalCharity #RescueCat #AnimalWelfare #PoweredByBurns

So far, 7,307 people have signed our petition to see hunting with dogs in Northern Ireland banned, and we know there’s more of you out there that want to see an end to this needless, barbaric sport. With over 46,000 animal lovers following us across our platforms, we would love to see your support for our campaign efforts turn into action. Positive action which could have a real, lasting impact and give more animals in NI a better future. It only takes a moment to sign and share our joint petition with the League Against Cruel Sports. A little longer if you’d also like to tell your MLA how you feel! For the sake of our depleting wildlife and for the sake of the dogs who should be kept as pets and not used as weapons, let’s do this together. We have an opportunity to develop the most robust legislation that leads the way to bringing this form of sadistic animal abuse to an end. He’s been doing great and we’re really fortunate to have adopted him. Thank you for all your wonderful work!" Thank you for choosing to #AdoptDontShop and for giving Maul his forever home!❤️ If you would like to offer a rescue cat a fantastic home, find out who is available on our website 👉 https://buff.ly/4aL2ee6 #AdoptACat #RescueCat #AnimalCharity #AdoptDontShop

HEDGEHOG CAUGHT IN A TIGHT SQUEEZE 🦔 This hedgehog got himself into quite the predicament yesterday, as our wildlife officer Phil responded to a call about a hedgehog who had got himself stuck in a garden gate in Belfast. This chunky fella, who weighed in at whopping 1.455kg, was roaming between gardens when he encountered a gate in his path and thought he might just squeeze through to the other side. However, this hedgehog wasn’t so slick and ended up getting wedged between the gate bars. After some time and perseverance, the hedgehog finally managed to wiggle himself out and was transported to our centre in Newry for a once over by our wildlife team before getting ready to be released.😊 Instances like this are not uncommon, so ensuring hedgehogs can pass freely through your garden can be one of the best things you can do to help them and can be done by building a hedgehog highway – no hard hat required!👷♂️ A hedgehog highway is a series of holes (roughly 5inches) which are made in fences and walls that allow hedgehogs to move freely between gardens, as they can travel around a mile each night to find food. These ‘highways’ allow hedgehogs to happily move around without having to use busy main roads, which we all know can be very dangerous for them. This simple but effective task is a great way to do your part to help these adorable members of our wildlife thrive throughout Northern Ireland.🐾 #WildlifeRescue #Hedgehog #HedgehogHighway # Wildlife #AnimalCharity

Food Bank Donation Appeal 🐾 At the end of September, Antrim and Newtownabbey Mayor Cllr Neil Kelly joined USPCA CEO Nora Smith to deliver the first food parcels to the area's local Trussell Trust food bank. The USPCA pet food parcels initiative has been operating for six years, and last year saw 7,879 pet food parcels donated and shared with over 50 food banks across Northern Ireland. We currently are in need of pet food donations for our pet parcels, especially dry dog food, to help families feed their beloved companions. These parcels are a lifeline and help ensure pets stay with their families during difficult times. If you are in a position to make a donation, you can send food via our website by selecting 'Donate to USPCA' via the shipping options (SHIPPING IS FREE) 👉 shop.uspca.co.uk Please also feel free to leave food into our Newry Centre or any of our charity shops in Banbridge, Lurgan, Lisburn or Belfast! This #NationalBadgerDay we’re delighted to showcase this wonderful short film narrated by Megan McCubbin which aims to educate about the unfair persecution of badgers.🦡 Operation Badger is an initiative that has been re-launched by the UK Badger Crime Priority Group. A group that we are very proud to be part of as we campaign and act to protect badgers in Northern Ireland. Badger persecution comes in many forms, ranging from the horrific practice of badger baiting to avoidable sett disturbance / destruction which can occur when people carry out otherwise legal operations on land such as forestry or agricultural tasks. Badgers have been historically persecuted for sport, pest control and disease control. This National Badger Day, we’re urging supporters to take action and get involved in Operation Badger. Report any suspected illegal activity you see that causes harm to badgers by calling the PSNI on 101 and also to the USPCA on 028 3025 1000.
