READ OUR NEW BLOG: Remembrance Day 2024: Honouring Sacrifice and Resilience Each year, on the 11th of November, the UK pauses to honour the courage and sacrifices of the men and women who served in the Armed Forces during two World Wars and other conflicts. As those in the Armed Forces well know, the date marks the anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War I in 1918, officially declared on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. On Sunday 10 November 2024, Remembrance Day services will again commemorate the Armistice, culminating in the iconic wreath-laying ceremony at the Cenotaph. To mark this solemn and important occasion, we’ve created this blog to highlight the significance of this highly important day and show where you can watch the ceremonies. Their lively group entertained everyone with a delightful selection of well-known tunes. VOS’ very own Veterans Voices choir proudly joined them several numbers, as well as a songs they had prepared specially. The event was a resounding success, complete with a fantastic raffle that added to the excitement. READ OUR NEW BLOG: What happens at a VOS Drop-In Day? Have you been to a VOS Drop-In Day? They run on the first Wednesday of every month in Portsmouth and third Wednesday on the Isle of Wight. VOS also runs mini Drop-Ins in Gosport on the last Wednesday of each month. VOS Drop-In Days are a great opportunity for ex-Armed Forces and Merchant Navy Veterans (as well as their spouses, partners and carers) to join other VOS community members and access confidential support, from wellbeing and social activities to mental health and welfare. You can also just pop in for a cuppa and chat! This week we continue to highlight the importance of mental health support for veterans, and we reflect on the crucial role that organisations like ours, Veterans Outreach Support (VOS) and The Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) play in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of veterans and their families. Nigel, a VOS Service User and a Falklands War veteran shared his deeply personal journey with PTSD. After silently suffering, he found the courage to walk through the doors of a VOS drop-in, a moment that changed his life. And with the immediate support of our team, Nigel began his path to recovery. At VOS, we’ve supported over 2,500 veterans like Nigel, providing a safe space where they can access the help they deserve. Every day, we see the transformative power of our service. Stepping over the threshold takes courage, but as Nigel says, "Veterans Outreach Support saved my life." In a week here in the UK when we are hearing more distressing news about well known figures and wide-scale abuse of women, sadly when the perpetrator is beyond the reach of justice and the law, we should do all in our power and influence to end all forms of predatory, sexual abuse and gender discrimination.
