For #EarthScienceWeek 2024 let's celebrate our fantastic geoparks. 😃 The Wren’s Nest is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and part of the Black Country Global #Geopark, West Midlands, UK. A place of both geological and historical significance, the geopark is renowned for its well-preserved #Silurian exposures, with abundant fossils, including the famous "Dudley Bug" #trilobite Calymene blumenbachii. The exposures shown in the video are Geopoints 4 & 5 on the nature reserve's geopoints trail. This reserve is a great place to explore the area's geological features, as well as the historical significance and see some amazing fossils! #ESW2024 #EarthScienceEverywhere #VRGS

For #EarthScienceWeek2024 here are some Carboniferous ripple marks found on a recent nature walk by Brian Burnham, PhD, FGS! Ripple marks are instantly recognisable when seen in modern (river or seaside) environments. Stumbling across a set of Carboniferous (319 Ma) age symmetrical ripple marks, on a walk through the Derbyshire countryside was a fascinating discovery. Even more fascinating was identifying a rarely preserved structure – interference ripples. These suggest that there were two forms of wave action, perhaps in a shallow water and enclosed environment. #VRGS Digital Outcrop Models, scale bar 0.50 m. The second image shows the surface with dip attribute - note the lee and stoss side of the ripple marks are clearly identifiable. #ESW2024 #EarthScienceEverywhere #PenineLowerCoalMeasures

It's Earth Science Week 2024!🌍 Here at VRGeoscience we are taking the opportunity to share some of our digital outcrop models showcasing 'Earth Science Everywhere' - this year's theme. 😊 #geology and #industrialheritage meet at Musbury Heights Quarry, Rossendale giving us a glimpse into the world of 19th-century working life. Let's take a moment to appreciate the remarkable work of the past and the technologies of the present in this digital outcrop model! It's #fieldworkfriday! Brian Burnham, PhD, FGS, is collecting digital outcrop data in Texas. 👇
I had a great time revisiting some Dallas-Ft. Worth #Texas #geology with Erik Friesen this past week! We focused on the Upper Cretaceous Austin Chalk, primarily along creeks and railways throughout the area. We investigated some interesting structural features and did a bit of #fossil hunting too. The Austin Chalk may not look exciting at first glance, but they're fascinating rocks that tell a great story of deposition in a warm water environment - when the #Cretaceous Interior Seaway was at its largest! We also collected some #digital outcrop data - so stay tuned for #3D outcrop models of these great rocks! #fieldworkfriday

🌍🚀 World Space Week 2024: Sentinel-2 Imagery of Mount Everest (Sagarmatha/Chomolungma) 🛰️ This video of Sentinel-2 imagery showcases the highest point on Earth, Mount Everest—known locally as Sagarmatha in Nepal and Chomolungma in Tibet. This breathtaking footage captures the mountain's majesty from space, offering a unique perspective on one of the planet’s most iconic landmarks. Through advanced satellite technology, Sentinel-2 provides detailed imagery that supports scientific study of this remote region. By monitoring changes in the mountain’s glaciers, snow cover, and surrounding terrain, this data plays a crucial role in understanding the impacts of climate change on high-altitude ecosystems and supporting sustainable environmental practices. As we celebrate World Space Week, this video underscores the important contributions of satellite missions like Sentinel-2 in helping us better understand and protect our planet’s most extreme and significant environments. #WorldSpaceWeek2024 #Sentinel2 #MountEverest #Sagarmatha #Chomolungma #GeospatialData #EarthObservation #SpaceTechnology #RemoteSensing #ClimateScience #SustainableDevelopment #SatelliteImaging
