WasteAid has teamed up with Lufthansa to tackle airline waste, focusing on flights arriving at Mumbai Airport in India. ✈️ Together, we’re identifying ways to boost recycling rates and drive circularity for onboard materials, reducing the amount that's sent to landfill. The first phase of the project includes a scoping study to map Lufthansa’s current waste practices and pinpoint opportunities for sustainable improvements. Last week marked the beginning of an impactful journey for our first group of women and youth participants as WasteAid kicked off of the first day of training for our Uganda #Wastepreneur Challenge. The first 30 participants, who work in the informal waste sector in Kampala, are being taken through our bespoke 12 week waste entrepreneur curriculum, where they will be capacitated with knowledge, skills and strategies to grow their waste business. Already our programme is shifting perceptions, as we delivered our orientation and waste and the environment modules. One participant, Samanya Juliet shared that she didn’t know there was a different between dumpsites and landfills. Another, Sekulya, learnt that plastic can be processed into new products that could create new income streams for him. A third participant, Hellen is already expanding her network of collectors through collaborating with other participants. We’re excited to see how inspiration will lead to innovation that will transform into business opportunities for these individuals. Stay tuned as our participants learn, connect, and grow! #Waste #Recycling #Women #Youth #Entrepreneurs | Bunzl plc

From waste ➡ To an educational tool This #RecycleWeek we're spotlighting Mpho Motatinyane who runs a successful recycling business following support from WasteAid's Wastepreneur challenge. After noticing piles of discarded cardboard boxes and paper at her son's school, Mpho realised there was an opportunity to recycle these and turn them into something useful. She began creating spelling and educational cards for her son's classmates. Mpho then entered our 12-week Wastepreneur challenge where she learned about the circular economy and business basics such as budgeting and forecasting, helping her to establish her business. In her first month of trading, Mpho secured 80 orders and employed two part-time staff. Mpho is now expanding her venture and inspiring others by demonstrating how waste can be transformed. We recently conducted one of the largest studies Uganda has seen as part of our textile reuse initiative! 🧵 We surveyed over 1,000 stall holders and traders at Kampala’s largest second-hand textile market, Owino. The purpose? To understand the textile value chain and identify the textiles that can best be reused and recycled. Before we share the results of our research with you, take a look at some images of our time at the Owino market below! 👇

Our Programme Director, Michelle Wilson, discusses our Uganda textile project in a recent article for MRW - Material Recycling World. The innovative pilot project has seen us speak to more than 1,000 market traders in Uganda’s largest second-hand market, Owino, to build an accurate picture of the textile value chain and identify opportunities for textiles to be reused. We’re also working alongside organisations, such as the Ugandan Tailors Association, to repurpose discarded textiles and support a circular economy, benefiting women and young entrepreneurs.
