Thrilled to see that Community is the theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week! At WCC, community is at the core of everything we do. We deeply understand the power of connection, belonging, and support in promoting positive mental health for all. We’re excited to take part in this important conversation and contribute to building stronger, more connected communities. #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #MHAW2025 #CommunityMatters
We’re excited to share that our theme for Mental Health Awareness Week (12-18 May 2025) is ‘Community’. 📢 Being part of a safe, positive community is vital for our mental health and wellbeing. We thrive when we have strong connections with other people and supportive communities that remind us, we are not alone. Communities can provide a sense of belonging, safety, support in hard times, and give us a sense purpose. We want to use this Mental Health Awareness Week to celebrate the power and importance of community. 💜 Thanks to all the partners who help to make the campaign possible including Pinterest, our lead partner for a second year. #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #MHAW2025 Find out more 👉 https://bit.ly/46KKpKN

Rain or shine, nothing can stop our adventures! ☔✨ On Monday, our refugee social activity group braved the wind and rain to explore the wonderful Horniman Museum and Gardens. From the charming aquarium to fascinating exhibitions and a magical visit to the butterfly house, it was a day full of culture, history, and wildlife! 🦋🌍 As one group member beautifully put it: 'Thank you for that wonderful trip, it was so good! I really enjoyed it, even though the rain tried to disturb us. Thank you, we love you—God bless you.' ❤️ #Community #RefugeeSupport #MuseumDay #HornimanMuseum #LondonAdventures #RainCantStopUs

If you’ve made new year’s resolutions, they might start to feel a bit harder at this point of January. With that can come feelings of guilt or shame, leaving us feeling down about ourselves. These emotions can be tough on our mental health, as they affect how we view ourselves and our self-esteem. If this feels familiar, it might be helpful to rethink some of your resolutions. By approaching your goals with more flexibility and kindness, you can make any changes you’d like in your life feel more achievable and encouraging. 💜 This way, you can celebrate small victories, and avoid the pressure of a pass-or-fail mindset. How can you re-frame your goals this year?

👉 Significant gaps on CVs. 👉 An inability to build UK work experience and professional networks. 👉 A lack of opportunity to keep up to date with career-specific skills and advancements within industry. 👉 Financial insecurity. 👉 Stress. 👉 The potential for exploitation. These are some of the barriers to employment, and wider implications of the asylum system, that impact refugees as they begin to rebuild their lives in the UK. As our CEO Ciara Devlin writes, a move to allow asylum seekers to work after six months of waiting for their asylum claim to be processed would go a long way in reducing the barriers to employment that refugees in the UK face.
I welcome the call by Professor Brian Bell, chair of the Migration Advisory Committee, for asylum seekers to be allowed to work after six months of waiting for their claim to be processed. Such a move would go a long way in reducing the barriers to employment that refugees in the UK face. 📰 Full article available here: https://lnkd.in/e6kA4dKB Under current rules of the (often-lengthy) asylum process, most asylum seekers are not permitted to work while they wait for their application to be approved. Between 2023-24, 67% of our clients at Breaking Barriers spent more than a year waiting to receive their refugee status. One in 20 waited longer than 10 years. These long periods of limbo create obstacles to gaining employment. These can include significant gaps on CVs, an inability to build UK work experience and professional networks, and lack of opportunity to keep up to date with career-specific skills and advancements within industry. This limbo also creates financial insecurity, stress and the potential for exploitation. Despite, on average, having a higher level of education than the British public (59% of our clients had a Level 4 qualification or above, compared to 34% of the general public) refugees in the UK are four times more likely to be unemployed than people born here. On average, they earn about half of what UK nationals do per week. Breaking Barriers’ latest findings show that 79% of our clients were either unemployed or economically inactive when they enrolled with Breaking Barriers (compared to 4% unemployed and 22% economically inactive for the UK population as a whole). Gaining that first work experience is a big step on the journey towards meaningful employment and building a new life. It allows people to build essential work experience, achieve financial independence and security and integrate more effectively. Our clients say it gives them confidence, a chance to practice their language skills and not feel so isolated. #Lifttheban
