Dr Paul Stephenson OBE, Bristol’s first Black youth worker and the man behind the Bristol Bus Boycott has passed away. I know that I am incredibly lucky to work at Watershed because it does so much incredible and hopeful work. But one of my favourite times of year is the week that we hold Cinema Rediscovered Festival. Its not just because I get to discover great films (many that I have never heard about before) on the big screen they were intended for. It's mainly because of the depth of conversations that go on around the films. The festival started yesterday and I've already had conversations about: - how and if you can separate the problematic (and sometimes horrific) actions of a person involved in making a film and the film itself which is a product of many people's work - how the difference between commercial cinemas and what an independent cinema like Watershed does is mainly curation of the art form of film - the issues with rights to films where, much like the Philanthropic world I spend most of my time in, access to the rights (or the 'wealth' of the films) is held by the few and how difficult it can be to access them - How audiences maybe willing to view a film because they trust the curator or organisation that is screening it - How Rita Hayworth's screen presence is mesmerising Most of all I love that the festival shows how important Cinema is because it gives us the chance to explore worlds we could never be in and be faced with stories that show us that our experience of the world is not the only one.
