About us

With almost 300 bookshops and employing over 3000 booksellers , Waterstones is the leading high street bookseller in the UK and Ireland. Amsterdam and Brussels play host to Waterstones’ European presence, and two further jewels in the bookseller’s crown are London’s Hatchards and Dublin’s legendary bookshop Hodges Figgis. Waterstones has opened several new shops over the last few years and invested in existing locations. The company also achieved a turnaround of fortunes for their online platform, Waterstones.com. In 2018 Waterstones further acquired British bookshop chain Foyles. Good bookselling and bookseller expertise is the driving force behind Waterstones’ bookshops, and every year Waterstones runs thousands of author events across the country from weekly story time sessions and book clubs to author talks and large book signings. One of the biggest events of the year is the prestigious Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, voted for by Waterstones’ expert booksellers. Other notable activity include the Waterstones Book Of The Year announcement and support for the Waterstones Children’s Laureate.

It is with enormous pleasure that we announce Greenwild by Pari Thomson as the Overall Winner of the Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2024. Allying the mesmerising fantasy storytelling of Impossible Creatures to the passionate eco-awareness of The Last Bear, Pari Thomson’s irresistible debut bursts with adventure, worldbuilding and the sights and sounds of the natural world. On a mission to find her missing mother, Daisy Thistledown discovers a portal in Kew Gardens to the enchanted Greenwild – a lush land where plants and flowers possess astonishing magical powers. But these powers are in danger from a sinister force that threatens to destroy not only the Greenwild but Daisy’s world as well. Populated by unforgettable characters, including a cat with an attitude and a boy who can talk to animals, Greenwild fizzes with invention, excitement and heart. Best Illustrated Book Winner was The Search for the Giant Arctic Jellyfish by Chloe Savage - A truly gorgeous volume filled with the wonder and magic of science and nature. And the Best Book for Older Readers went to Thieves' Gambit by Kayvion Lewis - A propulsive romantic fantasy pitching a 17-year-old thief into a dangerous competition to save her mother Find them all here: https://bit.ly/3PvX8un

We're delighted to have been nominated for Book Retailer of the Year and Children’s Bookseller of the Year at this year's British Book Awards. In two strong categories at the 'Nibbies' we hope that our ability as booksellers to champion great books, to unite readers of all ages with authors through our events and our continued commitment to invest in new and existing shops across the UK to make them the best they can be for their local community will shine through.   Serena Russo’s nomination as Individual Bookseller of the Year is a perfect example of that bookselling spirit personified. Good luck to her and to all our booksellers who make these nominations possible. To see all the shortlists: https://lnkd.in/eAQbNc_5
