To no one's surprise, Nintendo has sued Pocketpair, Inc.. ↳ Pokémon vs. Palworld is happening, after all. Let's put our recap caps. Pocketpair's Palworld launched in early access this January. It was a massive, unexpected success. A few glaring similarities with Pokémon turned everyone's heads. Most turned for the better. Others weren't so flattering. Online users and forums eventually accused Palworld of: 📌 Stealing Pokémon's character and creature designs 📌 Infringing Pokémon's intellectual property rights 📌 Using parallel mechanics to the ones used in Pókemon and other survival games Reality is a little trickier, in any case. Copyright infringement is always difficult to prove. 💡 Particularly in an industry where ideas and mechanics are constantly refined and implemented in new contexts and variants. Noting this, Nintendo went through a different route. Patent infringement. This strategy makes sense for a couple of reasons: ✅ It's less subjective ✅ It's easier to defend in court ✅ Its rulings set a precedent in the industry That third bullet point is what worries us. We're not going to play devil's advocate here. You can argue that Palworld's resemblance to Pokémon is more than passing. But it's a tremendously fun and loved game with a considerable fanbase. What happens if the lawsuit ends up in a win for Nintendo? It will probably lead to an out-of-court settlement and a patent written in stone. Justice will prevail. Nevertheless, here's some food for your thoughts: When did you last see a fresh take on Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis system? --- Did you enjoy today's Hot Take? Last week, Sony finally unveiled the PS5 Pro. ↳ A new, impressive step in the Sony ecosystem. But was it a 'console war' ender? At the moment, it's tough to say. On paper, the PS5 Pro's improvements sound groundbreaking. ✅ An upgraded GPU with 67% increased computing power ✅ Improved ray tracing that at least doubles the PS5's previous speeds ✅ A new AI-driven upscaling technology, PSSR, for larger resolutions and sharper image clarity ✅ 2 TB internal SSD, a marked advance from the previous model's 825 GB All of this is for "only" $699. £699 if you happen to live in the UK. It's tempting to see such a sting as justified. After all, Sony is bringing their A-game to this console: 📌 No need to pick between Fidelity and Performance modes anymore 📌 Added storage space helps with heavier, more demanding games 📌 Less technical limitations means more high-quality games coming up But all of this comes with caveats of its own. Sacrifices that make this bundle harder to swallow. → No disc drive included → No vertical stand included → No new games in sight All of this adds approximately $100 more to the buying price. At this point, wouldn't it be better to buy a PC? We get it: Sony's taking advantage of the moment. Currently, the Japanese console maker doesn't have competition. ⚠️ Switch sales continue to be strong, but the hypothetical Switch 2 is still nowhere to be seen – and it will likely not join the "performance" segment ⚠️ Xbox's strategy seems to be focusing on multi-platform gaming, making its exit from the console space a plausible scenario ⚠️ The 'PC market race' will be unfazed by Sony, with budget being trivial to hardcore enthusiasts Considering all of this: Was PS5 Pro the right move for Sony? It seems that way. But without any new games or products to stand out... It's going to be lonely at the top. --- Did you enjoy today's Hot Take? Let's talk about the pink elephant in the room. ↳ Is remote/hybrid work going away soon? Four years ago, alternative ways of working began to rise. These were born out of many issues: 📌 COVID-19-related lockdowns 📌 A shift in attitude towards mental health and wellness 📌 Waning productivity across the board Remote/hybrid working offered a solution. Studios and employees thrived. ✅ Reduced infrastructure costs ✅ Improved work-life balance ✅ A way to stay productive At the beginning, it worked. People were happy; developers continued to deliver. The industry moved forward. Four years later, it's not looking so easy. Studies are showing a more nuanced scenario 🔍 → Working at home can lead to isolation and burnout if not handled properly, leading to productivity losses → Although many companies have cracked the code of working remotely, most still run into problems trying to understand it → Bigger companies that made impressive infrastructure investments are starting to drown in debt Which begs the question: are modern ways of working here to stay? The likely answer is yes. However, it will demand more effort from employers and developers 👇🏻 1️⃣ Understanding success cases 2️⃣ Setting new onboarding/support models 3️⃣ Rethinking the ways productivity is measured --- Did you enjoy today's Hot Take?
