We’re proud to share that today, Weatherden’s own Dr Harriet Holme MD PhD is giving a seminar for the N=1 Collaborative on:     The challenges and opportunities in rare diseases    It’s easy to hear the word “rare” and think it implies a small problem. Whilst each rare disease affects fewer than 100,000 people in Europe, there are 10,000 rare diseases [1] in total. In the UK over 4 million people live with a rare disease [2] and more Americans live with a rare disease than those who have HIV, heart disease or a stroke combined [3].     Beyond patients, these life-limiting conditions significantly impact families and caregivers, with an estimated 1 in 7, or 9.4 million people in the UK, affected. Globally, the number of affected individuals is staggering, highlighting the urgent need for collective action. Less than 5% of rare diseases have an approved treatment [4].     Thankfully, despite their distinct nature, rare diseases share many similarities in terms of their drug discovery and development pathways. Investment in rare diseases is essential for 95% of patients who are without approved treatments. Together, we're supporting our dads, brothers, sons, partners and friends by raising awareness and funding life-changing research. Prostate Cancer UK's research has driven some of the biggest breakthroughs in prostate cancer – from more accurate diagnoses thanks to multiparametric MRI, to the world’s first precision medicine for prostate cancer. This is our third team fundraising event for charity after raising £2,250 for Kidney Research UK in 2022, and £2,665 for PCD Research in 2023. We are very excited to be getting together for a 25km Halloween Walk around London on Oct 26th 2024 and hope to smash our target of £2,500!
