Over the last 100 years, tuberculosis research has saved millions of lives. However, tuberculosis remains the world’s leading cause of death from a single infectious agent – and there is currently only one licensed vaccine. Around the world, we’re working with researchers like Professor Thomas Scriba to develop new tools to tackle this epidemic.

Young people have the highest burden of mental health globally. The International Association for Youth Mental Health (IAYMH) works to change that. We’re proud to sponsor their seventh international conference, taking place this week in Vancouver. To mark the launch of the event, here are three key stats about youth mental health: • Around 1 in 4 young people will experience mental health problems each year • Half of all mental health problems develop before the age of 15 years • 75% develop by the age of 25 A key part to achieving IAYMH’s mission is collaborating with experts in the mental health sector and involving young people in deciding what’s best for them. At Wellcome, we believe including people with lived experience of mental health problems is crucial to finding effective solutions and advancing science. Calling climate and health researchers and policymakers 📢 Are you interested in evaluating the health impacts of climate action from an economic perspective? Currently, economic evaluation methods and approaches are available but disparate. Developing globally applied, consistent and comparable guidance will strengthen the research capacity and build the evidence base. Get involved with the ECO-CHICA project today ⬇️
How should we value the health benefits of tackling climate change? The ECO-CHICA project—funded by the Wellcome Trust and led by OHE, LSHTM, and CMCC—is working to build consensus on how to assess the health impacts of climate action. We’re bringing together expertise from health and environmental economics to develop practical, globally consistent guidelines for economic evaluation. 🔹 Are you a researcher exploring climate and health impacts? 🔹 Do you use evidence to inform policy on climate action and health? Let’s collaborate! Register your interest: https://lnkd.in/dEvmhCaP

We’re funding research to advance the validation of novel targets for drug discovery for anxiety, depression and psychosis. Successful teams will receive up to £700,000 each for up to two years – and get access to industry experts. 💡 Why are we funding this? Target validation is a critical step in drug discovery. It tests whether a new drug target can lead to clinical benefits, but it’s underfunded. By progressing novel targets, we hope to generate the evidence needed to discover new pharmacological treatments for mental health. 🔍 What do we mean by 'targets’? Any biochemical entity in the body that a drug can bind to, such as receptors, proteins, enzymes or the gut microbiome. 👤 Who can apply? This call is open to teams of researchers from any relevant discipline, at any stage of their career and based anywhere in the world. 🗓 When is the deadline? Submit your preliminary applications by 15 April 2025. ✍️ How do I apply? Visit our website for more information, including how to apply: https://lnkd.in/eZ7ECpZn

Tuberculosis is an ancient disease. But the only licensed vaccine was invented over 100 years ago and is not as effective as we need it to be. Research into new solutions would save millions of lives. And, as Bryan Bryson explains, collaboration will be crucial to unlocking the answers.

Is it possible to predict the future of science? The Science Breakthrough Radar at the GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator, supported by Wellcome, aims to do just that. The Radar brings together researchers, scientists and people working in policy to understand and anticipate what’s next in science. This helps policymakers prepare for the implications of upcoming technologies and potential science breakthroughs. Sophie Gilbert, Programme Lead for the Science Breakthrough Radar, tells us more about the Radar in our latest Wellcome Guest Lecture ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/ePYjg5-3
