Our wonderful Britannica’s Encyclopedia Infographica authors, Andrew Pettie & Valentina D'Efilippo, hosted 'Amazing Infographics: How data can reveal our world in a whole new way!' at The Week Junior UK Book Festival yesterday 📊 📚 By the end of the workshop all the kids had designed their very own ice cream infographic to visualise the popularity of flavours, toppings, cup vs cone, and how often they eat it. The end results were extremely creative and left everyone wanting an ice cream! #infographics #visuallearning #authorevent #TheWeekJuniorBookFestival2024

Author of Word Power, Lecturer in Reading for Pleasure for The Open University and freelance educator
We are half-way through Phase 2 of the What on Earth! magazine engagement study with 610 Year 5 pupils from schools across the UK. I'm pleased to be working with Reading for Pleasure (The Open University) colleagues Teresa Cremin and Sarah Critten and john gordon-reid from What on Earth! who are supporting this essential research. We are exploring the nature of pupils' engagement with a non-fiction magazine, how this material draws in reluctant readers and how access to a shared, monthly publication can impact wider reading choices. We have just completed the mid-point teacher and pupil focus group discussions and the findings so far are quite interesting. Teachers have commented on the value of pupils reading information in 'chunks,' with opportunities for discussion and social interaction. Pupils have also commented on the value of their peers all having copies of the same publication to browse, discuss and revisit together. We look forward to visiting again in December to hear further views. To read the findings from Phase 1 of this study, visit

This week, Infographica was celebrated and shortlisted for the prestigious @TheWeek Junior Book Awards! While we didn’t take home the win, being among the finalists in this exclusive selection which recognises excellence in children's literature is an incredible honour. The creativity and diverse topics celebrated in that room showcased the power of children's literature to inspire hearts and minds, nurturing the next generation, and reaffirmed that books are definitely not dead! As always, a huge shoutout to the dream team—my co-authors Andrew Pettie & Conrad Quilty-Harper and the What on Earth! team. It was so fun to see you all. Here’s to many more adventures in #datastorytelling for kids! 📚✨ #Infographica #BookAwards #ChildrensLiterature #TheWeekJunior #Creativity
