Wheal Jane Laboratory are producing collectable ingots from the last Cornish Tin, from the last Cornish Mine!
Cornish History In The Making A previous blog item entitled “The Last Cornish Tin Smelter” back in March included plans to smelt the last South Crofty tin concentrate from ore mined in 1998 using a single new hot mark “WHEAL JANE MINE BALDHU – SOUTH CROFTY TIN”. These 10kg ingots are being produced for the South Crofty Collection jewellery business and will eventually be processed into quality jewellery items. The production of these ingots has now largely been completed with only limited concentrate stocks remaining. However, the volume of interest raised from the article, and the historic importance of what will almost certainly be the last significant quantities of Cornish tin smelted in Cornwall, has prompted a further plan. To commemorate the end of a historic tradition, a limited edition run of tin ingots will be smelted with two hot marks in the traditional Cornish pattern. One will be the new hot mark described above and the other will be an original “Lamb & Flag” hot mark. The ingots will weigh approximately 28lb (12.7kg), which is the traditional size from the 19th century, and will be available to collectors in early 2025. Even if South Crofty mine restarts production in the next few years or other Cornish mines re-open in the future, it is extremely unlikely that commercial tin smelting will resume in Cornwall. Therefore, by producing collectable ingots from the last Cornish tin, from the last Cornish tin mine, with the last Cornish hot mark, Cornwall’s mining legacy will be preserved for posterity.

Have you been asked for a list of desk studies for your new development? At Wheal Jane Consultancy we try to combine reports wherever possible! Our most common joint report is a Phase 1 Desk Study and Mine Search. The phase 1 also always includes a geotechnical and ground gas risk assessment. The Phase 1 Desk Study is an initial risk assessment based on BS10175:2011 and CLR 11. The report may be referred to as a desk study, preliminary investigation, preliminary risk assessment or contaminated land – risk assessment. We always complete a walkover survey as part of a phase 1. This involves a visual inspection of the site to record any obvious signs of contamination (i.e. leaking oil tanks, asbestos etc). Photographs will be taken and included within the Phase 1 Preliminary Risk Assessment. An effective and reliable mine search depends much on the data and information available to the researcher, but even more so on the knowledge and expertise of that researcher. A qualified mining geologist is able to not only interpret available information but to assess situations where limited documentary evidence exists by adding local knowledge, geological expertise and practical experience. Wheal Jane Consultancy offers concise and site-specific research and reporting on the presence of features relating to mines, quarries and clay workings. We are also able to undertake Preliminary Flood Risk Assessments. The reports will make recommendations for any further investigations that may be deemed necessary as a result of the findings, and will be suitable for submission to local authority planning officers as part of the planning application for the site. Please get in touch if you think you require any desk studies for your site! We currently have good availability for site walkovers allowing us to reduce turn around times. #landcontamination #geotechnical #mining #cornwall #planning #surveys

Footings Inspections If your site is in a historic mining area it may be recommended to examine the footings of the development. Once foundation trenches have been excavated, but prior to being infilled with concrete, the ground profile is inspected for signs of mining activity. This method is suitable when a development is situated within a mining district but there is no direct documentation of mining activity. The inspection process allows for a detailed examination of the geology of the site and for identification of any signs of ground disturbance. We can often get to site within 48hrs of being notified the footings are ready to view. If you require a footings inspection or would like some further information contact us on consultancy@wheal-jane.co.uk or 01872 560200 #mining #cornwall #footings #inspection
