Nuts are crammed with immense nutrient power, in many cases more than vegetables yet they’re not listed as one of your 5 a day portions in the Eatwell Guide… Let us explain why that matters to you… We are in the midst of a national health crisis of chronic disease (heart disease, cancer, Type-2 diabetes, dementia, depression and kidney disease) projected to grow by up to 92% over the next 15 years, resulting in many preventable deaths and costing our economy tens of billions each year. This crisis is largely due to long term over consumption of foods with poor nutritional value – poor in both macro nutrients (protein & fibre) but also micro-nutrients – vitamins & minerals. Poor diets account for 22% of all deaths in the UK, which are totally preventable. On 7 essential micronutrients (such as Magnesium, Copper and Iron) 70% of the UK fail to get the recommended daily allowance. There are a plethora of research studies that demonstrate the immense nutrient power of dried fruit nuts & seeds to help prolong a healthy life as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. As a result of their dense nutritional values: ✅Eating 5 portions of nuts a week can reduce your risk of heart disease by up to 50%! ✅2 servings a week of Walnuts have shown a 24% risk reduction for Type-2 Diabetes ✅Nuts lower LDL cholesterol by up to 14% ✅Daily consumption of nuts can reduce risk of Type 2 Diabetes by up to 25% ✅One serving of nuts per day showed 17% LESS diagnosed depression ✅For every 7g of fibre intake, there’s an anticipated 8% reduction in colorectal cancer The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition concludes that FIBRE (which is found in dried fruits and nuts) can significantly reduce incidence of Cardio Vascular Disease, Heart attack, Stroke, Type 2 Diabetes & Colorectal cancers too! YET UNBELIEVABLY NUTS ARE STILL NOT RECOMMENDED AS 1 OF YOUR A DAY, despite their immense nutrient power! Our mission is to increase the consumption of these highly nutritious, versatile little powerhouses for the long-term benefit to our nation’s health and economy. To do this we are lobbying the government to change the out-dated 5-a-day policy to include Nuts (& seeds for their similar nutritional benefits) as one of your 5 a day. To learn more about our mission and sign our petition, visit our website where you can also download a copy of Dr. Max Gowland’s White Paper Nuts, Seeds & Dried Fruit, Improving The Health of The Nation, with Nature’s Nutrient Powerhouses, where all of these facts above are sourced. #Nutrition #Whitworths #RethinkSmall

They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away. BUT did you know that portion for portion, mixed nuts (Walnuts, Almonds, Peanuts and Brazil Nuts) contain more nutrient power? Take a 25g portion of Apricots versus a one 5-a-day portion (80g) of fresh Apricots. Dried contains: 44% more Potassium – brilliant for your muscles & nervous system and your blood pressure 88% more Copper – great for skin & hair pigmentation, functioning of the nervous system and your immune system They’re also far more versatile to be used across many different meals and have much longer shelf lives reducing wastage. READ ME, IT COULD PROLONG YOUR LIFE: Spinach is great. Eat it. BUT portion for portion, Almonds contain more nutrient power. Let's compare a humble handful 25g portion of almonds versus one 5-a-day portion (80g) of spinach: The tiny 25g portion of almonds contains: - 4x Vitamin E – contributes to the protection of DNA from oxidative stress - 4x Riboflavin – great for the maintenance of your vision, blood cells, functioning of your nervous system, and reduces tiredness and fatigue - 6x Phosphorus – helps with children’s cognitive development, the maintenance of your bones and teeth, and energy metabolism Dried Fruit is also just as heroic. Take a 25g portion of Apricots versus one 5-a-day portion (80g) of fresh apricots. We know that eating fruit is an important (and delicious) way of getting some essential vitamins and micronutrients. But did you know you require 80g to count towards a portion of your 5 a day? That's 400g of fresh fruit or veg per day! This can be difficult to achieve but what if I told you there was an easy way to get even more of these key micro/macronutrients by consuming a smaller portion? Dried fruit, nuts and seeds are nature's powerhouse offerings that can provide you with snacks that are extremely dense in their nutritional value, meaning you can eat less to get even better results! In fact, when comparing 25g of DRIED FRUIT to 80g of FRESH FRUIT, we found it includes: - 3 x more potassium (found in dried apricots) - 5 x more calcium (found in raisins) - 12 x more iron (found in prunes, which contributes to reducing tiredness and fatigue) Dried fruit isn’t just a snack, it’s also an extremely versatile ingredient! Try adding some cranberries to your stuffing mix or sprinkling some chopped apricot into your tagine, these small yet easy changes can lead to some great health benefits. Food for thought... 💭 The Mediterranean-DASH Diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay, or better known as the 'MIND' diet is an eating pattern which promotes the consumption of specific foods that support brain health and help prevent dementia. Whilst there is a list of recommended foods and their portion sizes, we couldn't help noticing that included is '5+ servings a week of nuts'. Many nuts such as Walnuts and Peanuts contain high levels of Pantothenic Acid, proven by scientific studies to contribute towards optimal mental performance across memory, learning and even concentration. Furthermore, Niacin, a vitamin that is also found in these nuts has been scientifically proven to contribute to normal psychological function, slowing the process of cognitive decline. Including 5 servings of nuts into your weekly diet is extremely easy as a single serving is just 25g... a tiny handful!
