Your Creative Toolkit for Better Living

About us

The Academy of Wide Hearted Living is a cooperative of women working to make the world a better place. We provide training in the workplace and we run courses in the community. We help people build their creative toolkits so they develop different ways of responding to real-life issues. Hybrid working making it hard to build your dream team? We can help. What makes your heart sing? Not sure? We can help you find out. Think you're not creative? We will show you the way to your creativity. Looking for new solutions to old problems? We can teach you how to find them. Wellbeing on your agenda? Ready for something different? Get in touch. In your middle years? Want more joy? Come this way! We became a Community Interest Company so everyone who buys from us contributes to our Wellbeing for Changemakers programme - running lo/no cost events for people who work to make the world a better place. Creative people make creative communities make the world a better place.

  • When I got signed off with burnout at the beginning of last year, I was convinced a week off would set me right. Luckily, the nurse I spoke with had other, wiser ideas. A month later, I'd made big changes. The trouble with burnout is, it kind of creeps up on you. We are such adaptive creatures, bending and twisting ourselves into all kinds of shapes to meet ours and other people's expectations. If you think you might be at risk, there's a simple way of checking ... Search for 'Maslach's Burnout Inventory'. Do it Score it Take action The only way to beat burnout is to create change. So many of us were brought up to put other people first. It doesn't make sense. When we look after ourselves, we thrive. Everything else follows. Our sessions are designed to help you thrive. • I've been reading up on moon phases in preparation for the Daylight Saving sessions which begin in a couple of weeks. Part of the aim is to help keep us in synch with the seasons. I figured, why not make sure we're dancing with the moon too! And (completely coincidentally) the timing is perfect. We begin just before November's new moon - the optimum time for beginning new ventures. Our second session (Winter Zen) happens as the moon is waxing (getting full). Apparently, this is time for taking stock - what's going well? What's getting in the way of the good stuff? The full moon offers an invitation to cleanse - to get rid of all that no longer serves us. And this is when we're having our Hygge Huddle - sharing conversation and practical suggestions for making the most of the season. We have then have a rest week. Perfectly aligned to the moon's 'waning' period - more reflection and adjustment, with a focus on continuing to create space for something new'. If you want something to look forward to over winter - something to help you keep in line with the seasons whilst keeping the winter blues at bay, (so, next Spring, you can hit the ground feeling recharged and vibrant)... there's still time to sign up. • A book recommendation! Am paying it forward! A bold choice given that only on page 11! But I know it's a goodie. Liz Folan and I had a lovely writely chat a few weeks back. This is one of her suggestions ... Julie Cameron wrote The Artist's Way - the book that got me from being unable to say the words 'I am creative' - to where I am now (poetry-making, novel-writing, all-sorts-of-art-creating). And why am I sharing 'The Right to Write' today? Because, even though I know all this, sometimes I let life get in the way... get all caught up in lists and shoulds and forget to do the things that actually makes my heart sing. I bought the book because sometimes we all need to give ourselves permission to do the things we love. On page 9, Julie says "If we didn't have to worry about being published and being judged, how many of us might write a novel just for the joy of making one?" Connecting with our creativity and making time to do the things we love is so good for us. In terms of the NHS 5 ways to wellbeing ... what better way to connect with other people, learn new skills and be in the present moment! If you had absolute free reign, what would you do to nurture your creativity? I'd love to hear about your projects (whether they're works in progress, semi-permanently parked or long forgotten dreams). Want to talk creativity? Always up for a chat ... https://lnkd.in/dddHxNJn #wideheartedliving #creativity

  • So much loveliness happened at our Seaside Creativity & Wellbeing weekender! Here's a few more snaps. These are from Soulful Saturday afternoon. Embroidery, poetry-making, pastels and more. If I wasn't feeling so rough again (bleurgh) I'd still be abuzz! It was fab. If you'd like more creativity in your life, how about signing up for our Daylight Saving Club? It starts, online, when the clocks go back and runs through til Spring. More creativity. Better wellbeing. Lots of connection.
