🇯🇵 BIG news for customers sending Japanese Yen! 🇯🇵 We’ve just won approval to join Zengin, Japan’s domestic payment system, making us the first non-bank operating in Japan to have this access! 🎉 This is the first step towards gaining the ability to process #payments for our customers in real-time without any intermediaries. Once the work is completed to fully connect to Zengin, we’ll be able to provide instant (under 20 seconds)* cross-border payments to and from Japan for Wise consumer and business customers🚀. And it’s not just our customers that will feel the benefit. The CFPB wants to hear from you! 🚨 The U.S. consumer finance watchdog, the CFPB, is asking for #public comments to help eliminate junk fees in international money transfers. 💸 In March, the CFPB warned that advertising “free” transfers while hiding fees in inflated exchange rates could violate federal law. Over the past three years, these hidden markups have cost Americans $15.4 billion. Earlier today, I had the opportunity to speak in Swift's flagship Innotribe session titled the Future of Value with James Lloyd and Alvin Foo. We discussed how the concept of value is evolving and examined money, payments as well as the cultural and social factors that influence who gets to decide value. Spoiler alert: it’s all about the end users! Couple key takeaways from me: - Financial institutions (or companies in general) win over customers not just by appealing to them functionally but also psychologically - With so much happening in the payments landscape, a key takeaway was the importance of ensuring that the payment systems we rely on, present and future, be interoperable This is a topic that we at Wise are passionate about, having spent the past decade building an infrastructure that helps us bring low-cost, instant and convenient cross-border payments solutions to banks, and global enterprises.
