About us
The Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research and Data (WISERD) is a national, interdisciplinary, social science research institute. We have been designated by the Welsh Government as a national research centre. Using innovative approaches, our research spans the fields of economics, sociology, geography and political science. We are a collaborative venture between the universities of Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff, South Wales and Swansea – working together to improve the quality and quantity of social science research in Wales and beyond. Our research effects change by influencing the development of policy and practice across a range of sectors. WISERD also hosts ADR Wales (Administrative Data Research Wales) – a collaboration between Welsh Government, Swansea University Medical School and WISERD at Cardiff University. ADR Wales is part of the ESRC funded ADR UK (Administrative Data Research UK).

It was great to the return to the Metropole Hotel in Llandrindod Wells for our annual all-staff WISERD Away Days this week. An enjoyable and productive two days was spent with colleagues from across WISERD’s five partner universities – Aberystwyth University, Bangor University, Cardiff University, The University of South Wales and Swansea University. A packed itinerary comprised presentations on new and ongoing social science research projects, funding opportunities and engagement activities, and interactive sessions designed to get colleagues talking about their research and discussing some of the challenges and opportunities associated with open research. It was also a pleasure to welcome our new WISERD Director Adam Hedgecoe to the team!

Roedd yn wych dychwelyd i Westy'r Metropole yn Llandrindod ar gyfer ein diwrnodau WISERD Away blynyddol yr wythnos hon. Treuliwyd deuddydd pleserus a chynhyrchiol gyda chydweithwyr o bum prifysgol bartner WISERD – Prifysgol Aberystwyth, Prifysgol Bangor, Prifysgol Caerdydd, Prifysgol De Cymru a Phrifysgol Abertawe. Roedd amserlen lawn yn cynnwys cyflwyniadau ar brosiectau ymchwil gwyddorau cymdeithasol newydd a pharhaus, cyfleoedd ariannu a gweithgareddau ymgysylltu, a sesiynau rhyngweithiol wedi'u cynllunio i gael cydweithwyr i siarad am eu hymchwil a thrafod rhai o'r heriau a'r cyfleoedd sy'n gysylltiedig ag ymchwil agored. Roedd hefyd yn bleser croesawu ein Cyfarwyddwr WISERD newydd Adam Hedgecoe i'r tîm!

Thank you so much to our colleagues at Cymru Wledig LPIP Rural Wales for joining us at the WISERD Away Days and sharing the latest updates from LPIP, and especially to Ellen Hjort for your brilliant presentation on rural perceptions of growth.
Lovely to be in Llandrindod Wells for a couple of days, attending the WISERD away day. It was fascinating to hear about the research being undertaken by colleagues across Welsh universities, and identify how we can further collaborate and engage. Thanks to Dr Ellen Hjort for sharing her fascinating work on one of the LPIP projects with us, prompting a number of insightful questions.

Thanks for your brilliant session at the WISERD Away Days Katy Huxley - really informative and prompted some interesting discussions with colleagues. The game at the end was a lot of fun too!
A busy morning for me today, delivering a session on open research at the @WISERD awaydays, and presenting evidence on the effectiveness of careers guidance and progression to tertiary education for the Senedd's Children and Young People committee. Enjoying the relaxing views of the Welsh countryside on our way home! #wiserd #senedd #wales #ADRWales

Thanks very much Jemma Bridgeman for sharing all the exciting plans you have for this new project at the WISERD Away Days - look forward to hearing more and being able to share the toolkits!
I am excited to share one of WISERD’s latest research projects, ‘Building Social Value and Fair Work.’ The project examines the barriers and opportunities to create social value through construction and infrastructure projects in Wales. The construction industry has the potential to support people from communities facing barriers to employment, create jobs and encourage economic growth. Our research focuses on the implementation of the Social Partnership and Public Procurement (Wales) Act and its impact on social value creation. Key Outputs WISERD What Works Toolkits: What Works for the Construction Industry and Civil Society in Building Social Value in Wales What Works for Fair Work in the Construction Industry in Wales Lots more updates are coming soon! #SocialValue #SocialProcurement #Construction #Wales #CommunitySupport #Innovation

What a great room of people from across the four UKRI Local Policy Innovation Partnerships (LPIPs) sharing learning, expertise and challenges around working with communities. Fantastic to hear such positive feedback on the innovation and change which the LPIP programme is enabling at different levels. It was lovely to be hosted by old colleagues at WISERD. Thanks to them and to Prof Mike Woods and the LPIP Rural Wales team for making it happen.
Thank you to everyone who joined us in Cardiff last Friday to share experiences, your research, and best practice, to enable us to learn more about how we can work most effectively with local communities and people. It was wonderful to welcome colleagues from Yorkshire Policy Innovation Partnership (YPIP) , EPIC Futures NI , Local Policy Innovation Partnership (LPIP) Hub , UKRI, and FORTH2O Policy Innovation Partnership, amongst others. Thank you to you all for contributing to the success of the day, and we’re already looking forward to the next one in Northern Ireland! Thank you also to WISERD for all your support in organising the day.
