🚨 Volunteer appreciation post!! 🚨 I consider myself very fortune to work in events, but it’s often said (and we were always told at Uni) that “volunteers are the lifeblood of sport” As I’ve discovered in the last ten months, that is especially true in the Orienteering world. I can’t speak highly enough of the dedication and work that has been put in by a huge number of volunteers in the WOC 2024- Sprint World Orienteering Championships 2024 Local Organising Team (LOT) during my time on the project. That work got us to the starting line, but it has been added to in the last week by hundreds of volunteers from around the world who signed up to take on roles in Edinburgh to ensure the event ran smoothly. The mint-green army descended on parts of Edinburgh (often ridiculously early in the morning) with enthusiasm and positivity to guard controls, advise spectators, ensure that athletes passed through busy areas without incident; help set-up venues, manage logistics and support championship functions…and after all that, lots of them picked up a map, laced up their trainers and headed out to tackle a WOC Tour event.
