Yesterday was a lovely impromptu catch up between Women in Planning national, Women in Planning London Women in Planning South Midlands Women in Planning South West.

For #InternationalWomensDay Royal Town Planning Institute with Women in Planning and WSP brought together a range of brilliant speakers for a discussion of how planning is, can and should take account of gender dynamics in planning places and spaces chaired by Machel Bogues. I had the task of summarising (and trying to do justice to the breadth of) all the discussions. For so long, our cities have been planned and designed without careful consideration for gender or disability so many speakers highlighted the research happening to fill the gap. Speakers shared experience of turning this research into action with ambitious plans and case studies of success for a more inclusive built environment. As planners, we have so many competing considerations to balance notwithstanding the needs of the range of people in our cities. But, let’s keep sharing best practice, let’s keep relearning our bias, and listen and embed people's lived experience in our choices - which is exactly why I have always opted to specialise in stakeholder engagement and have the pleasure of working with diverse communities across the country on nationally significant projects in AECOM's stakeholder engagement team. #gendermainstreaming #diversity #inclusion #builtenvironment #powerinchoice #genderinformedplanning

This week we held our first event of 2025 - speed networking kindly hosted and sponsored by RPS. It was such a great way to set the scene for a year that will be filled with networking events. A conversation between Karen jones and Shelley Dix, shed light on their journeys to their current roles as Directors of Planning and Transport Planning, respectively. They also shared networking benefits and tips, and valuable lessons learned in relation to maternity leave, confidence and mentoring. The speed networking sessions were a great way to put the tips into action in speedy 3-minute rotations with new and known faces across the industry.
