Increasing the number and diversity of women in leadership roles in PR and communications
About us
The PR & communications industry is female dominated (67%) overall. However, at senior levels it becomes male dominated with only a third of boardroom positions taken by women. Women in PR exists to address this imbalance. Our mission is to improve equality and diversity across the industry by increasing the number and diversity of women in leadership roles.

“Our industry is getting better at embracing diversity – across gender, race and neurodivergence. But age is often overlooked. We need to normalise intergenerational teams knowing that it will benefit the team, the campaign and ultimately the work. I’m thinking grey-haired account execs… creative grannies… and strategists that travel to work on their Freedom Pass.” Our Vice President, Ginny Paton, recently spoke to PRWeek UK about ageism in the workplace and the benefit of intergenerational teams. Ageism remains a significant, but often overlooked challenge for many of us. Too often, older women are overlooked for promotions or pushed out before they’re ready to retire. According to a recent survey of businesswomen by Women of the Year Lunch and Awards, many women still face the same workplace challenges they faced in the 90s. The survey also revealed that: · 90% of survey respondents said more action was needed to tackle the problem of ageism. · One in three (37%) survey respondents aged 51 and above reported they had directly experienced age-related discrimination. · Nearly half of those asked – 47 per cent – said that more needs to be done to promote women into senior positions. Moving from agency to in-house is common in our industry, but you don't often hear the perspective from the other side. Our latest 'How I...' virtual event brought together three powerhouse women in PR - Rachel Ford Rosie Bannister Advita Patel who stepped out of their in-house roles into the ever-evolving world of agency life 💫 Our favourite takes? ✨ "Believe in your worth and silence your inner critic to take risks. The day I stopped seeking validation and trying to please everyone, my life changed. Others' opinions don’t define you—after all, trying to be everyone’s cup of tea will only make you a mug!" ✨ "Transitioning from in-house to agency work can be tough—you’ll need to build new connections. My advice? Start now. Attend industry events, reach out, and invite people for coffee or breakfast to grow your network." ✨"Whether in-house or agency, we’re all communicators. Delivering the right message to the right person at the right time is key. This adaptability gave me the confidence to move into an agency, knowing core communication skills are highly transferable." Missed the event? If you're a WiPR member, DM us and we’ll share a link to watch. Or sign up for our next session in October - details are coming soon 👀 #womeninpr #womenincomms #womensupportingwomen

We welcome PRWeek UK and People Like Us continuing to support the Pay Gap Report. Whilst there are green shoots to celebrate, it is concerning to see some metrics going backwards and a notable absence of larger agencies involved. Commenting on the report, our President Jo Carr said: “On the one hand the average gender pay gap has, worryingly, slightly increased by one per cent but on the other, it’s really encouraging to see more women reach senior leadership positions. “For me, more women occupying senior roles and being equitably paid for that role has to be the ultimate goal. “Pay transparency and benchmarking will always be crucial but what will make the most difference to the women in our industry is a continued and persistent push – by agency bosses and communications directors – to dismantle the barriers that stop women rising in the first place. “It’s why enlightened employers invest heavily in better parental leave policies, more flexible working and inclusive cultures. It’s why we need to tackle head-on pregnancy discrimination, health inequalities, ageism, racism, sexual harassment and the unequal burden of ‘life admin’ that can often upend women’s careers.” Read the full article below 👇 https://lnkd.in/euCpWn6r
