It's 2024 and we are still seeing sex inequalities in medical research 🫨🤪 The gender gap in medical research, alongside overarching misogyny, means real-life disadvantages for female patients. Even in terms of car safety... According to a study of 70,000 traffic accidents, they found that women are 73% more likely than men to get hurt in a car crash and 17% more likely to die. These are shocking statistics and we need to end these types of gender biases. #sexineequalities #medicalresearch
Scientists are working on wonderdrugs that could make people live longer, but it turns out they might not actually work on women. 🙃 The mice used in lab experiments are almost exclusively male, so it is “vanishingly unlikely” that the drugs being trialled would work on human women, biologist and aging expert Dr Steven Austad told The Guardian. About 75% of the drugs that extend lifespan in mice only work on males - something that scientists only found out after developing them on male mice and then belatedly testing them on females.
