Creating good work & ensuring everyone can access it - because good work is everyone's business. Charity no. 1211856.
About us
Work isn't everything, but good work can be. It can be the difference between poverty and a family-sustaining wage; between social exclusion and thriving community; between low-growth economies and successful ones. But in the UK, the odds are stacked against you accessing good work if you’re from a disadvantaged or marginalised background. That's why we're working with employers to create good work, and ensure everyone can access it. Good work is everyone's business. *** We're a not-for-profit initiative, currently incubated by IPPR. We've grown from the London Progression Collaboration project.

Such a pleasure to meet more of our East Bank apprentices in person last week for a personal development and networking session at UCL East. If you haven't explored the new East Bank hub for arts, culture and education on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park we would recommend a visit!
Last week we welcomed apprentices of the East Bank Shared Apprenticeship Programme to UCL's East Campus on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to hear more about career journeys in education and the arts with a talk from special guest Sam Wilkinson Dir. of Public Art at UCL, and reflect on their own networking skills and styles. Thank you UCL for hosting at your new site and for Evolve Apprentices Ltd., Clever Cloggs Day Nursery & Smarty Pants Day Nursery for taking part in the day. If you are a business based in Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney or Waltham Forest you can also benefit from the East Bank collective levy sharing fund and these tailored wrap-around sessions to support apprentices and line managers. Get in touch if you'd like to find out more 🚀 #eastlondon #creative #cultural #educational #smesupport #apprenticeships #careers

News stories collide in interesting ways! Read a new blog on our website, reflecting on the irony of Tony Blair suggesting that Brits should stop ‘self diagnosing with mental health conditions’ to save the government from the rising benefits bill, just days after the Guardian revealed retail assistants in the gig economy being charged to receive their earnings more quickly. #work #health #mentalhealth #goodwork #qualityofwork https://lnkd.in/e2Me5bpk

Something we hope lots of our employer network will get involved with! #NAW2025 #NAWBigThankyou #apprenticeships
Today I am delighted to launch The Big Apprenticeship Thank You. This initiative in partnership with some amazing employers has been developed for National Apprenticeship Week 2025 to say thank you to ALL apprentices up and down the country (regardless of training provider) for their hard work and commitment to self development. If you would like more information about how to get involved and how you can share this with your own apprentices, drop me a message. #NAWBIGTHANKYOU #NAW2025 #apprenticeships #thankyou

This is important work from the Social Market Foundation on SME apprenticeships, with a focus here on skilled trades. There's a lot that here that echoes our experiences at Workwhile, where we've supported over 2,000 SME apprenticeships since 2020 - many in construction and the skilled trades. We know what the challenges are, and also how to help SMEs to overcome them and offer high-quality apprenticeships. It's especially good to see the case for independent business support / brokerage gaining traction too - we made similar recommendations on this in our 'Join the Dots' report last year: https://lnkd.in/ehXmbYF9
🚨 OUT TODAY: UK skills crisis to worsen as small businesses unable to take on apprentices Our latest report shows how to fix the apprenticeship pipeline to ensure small businesses can address acute skills shortages. The main challenge for small trades firms is that they often lack necessary relationships. The majority of businesses surveyed said that they have little to no interaction with local colleges (52%), schools (69%), independent providers (60%), or universities (90%). This makes it hard, often impossible, to navigate the complex process of recruiting and training apprentices. Other disincentives to taking on apprentices included: - The cost and administrative burden - For green skill trades, shortage of relevant courses - Perception of young apprentices Skills England - the new body positioned to lead the UK’s skills landscape - will have decisive role to play, as an intermediary system and provision of relevant courses will have to be overseen by it. We also note that our proposed system would “complement, not complicate” employment reforms that will revamp Jobcentres. "To us, good work... happens in a workplace where there is open and honest communication." Good communication at all levels in an organisation was key for our young people in defining good work. It ensures there is clarity and that nobody feels lost. Crucially, it also involves listening to and responding to young people's input and feedback. #GoodWork #YouthEmployment #YouthVoice #Communication #InternalComms

"To us, good work is..." Being supported to continue developing is a vital part of good work for young people. "I think in life, you can't live without developing yourself in general. We're always going to be growing and developing our skills." What are you doing to ensure your colleagues are able to grow and develop in work? #GoodWork #YouthEmployment #YouthVoice #Skills #ProfessionalDevelopment

It's almost a month since we launched a unique new definition of good work, in the words of young people - and we agree with Barry Fletcher, CEO of Youth Futures Foundation who enabled us to do this piece of work to listen deeply to young people, that "youth voice has a vital role to play" in policy making.
"Between now and the implementation of the proposed Employment Rights measures in August 2026, youth voice and the ever-growing evidence base on what works in youth employment has a vital role to play". Recently, with Workwhile, we launched a definition of Good Work for young people, created by young people. Today, our CEO Barry Fletcher reflects on that definition in the context of proposed labour market reforms. Given the nuances of what Good Work means for young people, and the huge potential for employers and the UK economy if we can increase youth employment levels, youth voice is vital in facilitating positive outcomes of labour market reforms.
