A surge in sales of hybrid cars as electric vehicle take-up slows is set to provide an unexpected boost to demand for #platinum group metals (#PGMs) in the coming years, similar to the extended lifespan now predicted for coal. via MINING.com

A German research project has successfully connected a wind turbine to two electrolysers, opening the potential for direct hydrogen production at offshore wind facilities. The #H2Mare project – funded by Germany’s research ministry (BMBF) – saw Siemens Gamesa and Fraunhofer IIS IWES connect two electrolysers to a wind turbine at a test site in Denmark to overcome complex power fluctuations in #hydrogenproduction. It comes as the first step of plans to harness ideal offshore wind conditions to produce green hydrogen directly, with hopes of replicating the land-based system at sea. via H2 View

In Q2’24, global automotive platinum demand increased by 1% (+6 koz) to 820 koz, driven by a higher share of hybrid vehicles and the expanded use of platinum-rich trimetallic catalysts, particularly in North America. Automotive platinum demand in 2024 is forecast to reach a seven-year high, growing by 1% year-on-year to 3,237 koz, despite a downward revision in global vehicle production estimates to 91.1 million units. This growth continues to be underpinned by softer consumer demand for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and the continuation of growth in hybrid vehicle numbers, alongside stricter emissions legislation and an increase in platinum-for-palladium substitution, which is forecast to reach 752 koz this year. As hydrogen adoption grows due to energy transition, #platinum group metals usage will grow, said Andrew Hinkly, founding managing partner of AP Ventures. Recently, Hinkly recorded an episode of Green Rush with Matt Watson, founder of Precious Metals Commodity Management LLC. As the hydrogen economy grows, Hinkly said demand could spike for platinum group metals, which will be needed as catalysts. "Liquid organic hydrogen carriers are big users of platinum and palladium," said Hinkly. "In my mind that is a huge opportunity for demand growth within the hydrogen industry."

Siemens Energy has been contracted to supply and install the electrolysers needed for the 100-MW Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub (HGHH) to be built at the site of a decommissioned coal-fired power station in the Moorburg district. The order is for six units of Siemens Energy’s latest #protonexchangemembrane (PEM) electrolyser model. The stacks will be fabricated at the company’s new Gigafactory in Berlin and assembled at its Muhlheim site and at a European partner. #platinum #renewableenergy #hydrogeneconomy

REFIRE TO POWER COACHES FOR MAJOR EUROPEAN OEM REFIRE has signed an MoU with a leading European OEM to initially supply a number of 180-220kW PRISMA fuel cell systems for integration in long-distance #coaches, with testing starting this quarter. The 220kW variant is being prepped for European certification. Proven for long range, tough duty cycles: REFIRE’s PRISMA fuel cell system is tailored for the demands of long-range routes, offering top fuel efficiency. The 180kW system recently powered two 49-tonne trucks over a 1500km journey, pausing only to refuel, returning an average hydrogen consumption of just 7.4kg/100km. Coaches are next to benefit from these high-power systems, especially for cabin comfort and #HVAC (heating, ventilation, AC) needs, which can use up to 50% of a battery’s power, affecting range. Hydrogen's high energy density can address these power demands, with REFIRE systems also operating well in extreme climates (-30C to 50C) and at high elevations (up to 2,500 metres). Immediate availability and seamless upgrades: REFIRE’s single-enclosure 180kW PRISMA system is available now, allowing OEMs to reduce development cycles by integrating a proven system and later upgrading to the 220kW version seamlessly. Prisma’s form factor is designed to easily drop into the cavity of legacy #diesel powertrains. Preparing for ultra-low emissions Looming EU regulations require 90% emissions reductions from heavy-duty vehicles by 2040 with interim mandates of 43% by 2030 and 64% by 2035.
