Why has US EV adoption been so low, especially since Tesla is a homegrown success story? Although there are many consumer preference hurdles that need to be overcome, we also see a chicken-and-egg problem between the auto and the energy sectors playing out that will need to be addressed before we see robust growth in EV adoption seen in other markets.  Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/ehP26RFq #evadoption #electricvehicle #US

Battery metals, PGMs | SFA (Oxford)

Earlier this month I had the privilege of attending the Indonesia Critical Minerals Conference 2024 and to speak on a panel discussing the development of battery materials supply chains. Two things that really stuck out for me when talking to fellow delegates during the week in Jakarta were: ✅ Just how efficient the nickel industry has grown in Indonesia in the last five years, both in terms of deployment of FDI and in the new operations themselves (1+1 years for construction and ramp up of HPAL appears to be the new norm!) ✅ The recognition that reducing the environmental impact of Indonesian nickel is a cornerstone issue for local producers. Many of the largest producers are now putting in place plans to source alternative renewable power sources, which on a CO2 footprint basis, could put them in line with Australian and northern hemisphere operations. This puts (more) question marks over the argument for green nickel premiums from the 'western' producers. A big thanks to all attendees, Shanghai Metals Market and Meidy Katrin for an insightful few days. In these volatile times, collaboration is key. Let's keep the conversation going! 🤝 #CriticalMinerals #batterymetals #nickel #cobalt #MiningIndustry #SustainableMining #IndustryInsights

Can graphite export restrictions lift supply? Discussions about battery materials tend to focus on lithium, nickel, and cobalt, while graphite remains the forgotten but vital ingredient in the many EV plans that have been announced. SFA (Oxford) views graphite as the dominant anode material over the next two decades despite the promise of the many alternatives that are in development. However, while there have been many improvements to graphite anodes over the past few years, the development of upstream and midstream production outside of China has stagnated. As graphite production continues to be dominated by China and prices dampened for some time, it has not been easy to attract the necessary investment to build domestic supply. Now, graphite has become the focus of trade tensions between the US and China, and we believe that this could finally drive the much-needed industry development in North America and Europe and curb some of the geopolitical risks associated with the energy transition. Quebec is a critical player in building the North American supply chain and an essential ingredient in meeting the many decarbonisation goals announced. There is an abundance of critical raw materials, strong government support, the cheapest electricity prices in the country, and one of the cleanest electrical grids in the country. However, lower commodity prices have dampened primary mine activity for many critical metals in North America despite the enactment of supportive legislation targeting industry development. The bottom line is that the localisation of raw material supply must reduce the geo-political risks negatively impacting industry growth and derailing the many energy transition goals across many sectors. Are tariffs going to help or hinder the EV transition? Two of the largest electric vehicle (EV) markets, the EU and the USA, have announced tariffs to ratchet up the pressure on Chinese EVs in the last two months. On May 14, the Biden administration announced 100% tariff on all EVs imported from China. Yesterday, the EU announced its intentions to impose OEM-specific duties, ranging from 17-31%, on China-built EVs that have benefitted from ‘unfair state subsidies’.
