xsign were appointed by creative agencies f.r.a. and Identity, and main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine to create the signage scheme at The Goodsyard, a luxury residential complex in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. The Goodsyard is a mixed-use residential and commercial development. The site is made up of 395 residential units, located in 4 blocks: Great Western, Inward Shed, Top Shed and Outward Shed. The Goodsyard showcases a harmonious wayfinding scheme of strong design intent, complex technical manufacturing, an array of different materials used and bespoke finishes. xsign designed a bespoke signage package for Associated Architects at Enterprise Wharf – purpose built offices with travel connectivity at it’s heart. Enterprise Wharf has easy access to the A38 Aston Expressway, and the building is part of the Birmingham Innovation Quarter masterplan, which connects infrastructure with HS2. The external signage manufacture and installation presented the biggest technical challenge, but provides for the most striking and impressive part of the scheme. Built up face illuminated aluminium letters are mounted to a discrete structure with electrical wiring concealed within the cladding. The internal signage scheme features a mixture of glass manifestations installed in the lift lobbies and office spaces, and a broad range of 3mm thick high polished lucite signage with high grade paint finish and high resolution digital print. #signage #wayfinding #birmingham #architecture

xsign delivered a signage and wayfinding project at West Hub, a Cambridge University space used for learning and collaboration. The £40m building is labelled as a “destination quarter” where research, enterprise and socialising can take place. The building is open to all departments of the University as well as members of the public, creating a co-working space for academics and the wider community. The most striking external signage is at the entrance to the building where we have manufactured and installed illuminated opal acrylic letters, welded to a mild steel framework, which is securely attached to a concrete pad base. The West Hub letters provide a strong and striking statement on arrival to the building. Signage has traditionally been the last part of a building process. Buildings are designed and built, then signs are added, sometimes as an after thought. Signage is often added purely for a wayfinding purpose and little time and effort has been put in to how cohesive the signage is with the architecture. Through our long-standing partnerships with designers and architects over many years and across many projects, we have sought to educate and inspire designers to include architectural signage as a core part of the initial scheme. Where the built environment has signage at the heart of the project from the outset better wayfinding schemes are achieved, helping to improve accessibility, and signage becomes a design feature.
