🌍 Today, I had the privilege of attending the Commonwealth Opportunities event in Leeds, organised by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority. Leaders from the UK, Pakistan, India, Nigeria, and Canada gathered to explore partnerships across the Commonwealth. The day opened with an inspiring speech by Lord Mayor Abigail Marshall Katung, highlighting Leeds' role as a hub for global collaboration and its commitment to fostering international connections. Following this, we had breakout sessions on Nigeria and India. Sharon Kaur Jandu OBE and Amarjit Singh from the Yorkshire Asian Business Association led the India session, discussing trade opportunities in technology, manufacturing, and education. During a break, I connected with Mr. Shafiq Shahzad, Pakistan’s Trade Commissioner in London. Our discussion covered how Pakistan can harness technology and innovation to tackle challenges, with Mr. Shafiq sharing insights into the country’s efforts to foster an investor-friendly environment. His perspective underscored Pakistan’s commitment to becoming a competitive global market. We look forward to continuing this conversation to explore potential collaborations. The session continued with insights from British Friends of Pakistan (BFPK), led by Farakh R., and talks by James Mason, Amjad Bashir, Owais Hussain, Obaid Amin, and Ibrahim Jamali, highlighting Pakistan’s opportunities in green tech, healthcare, education, and infrastructure. I also discussed the application of AI and GIS with attendees, exploring how these technologies can support urban planning, healthcare logistics, and disaster resilience. Our expertise in AI and GIS, such as digital twin simulations, aligns with Pakistan’s needs, offering data-driven solutions for sustainable infrastructure. The session evolved into a panel with experts like Shafiq Shahzad, Jennie Holdstock, James Mason, Amjad Bashir, Owais Hussain, Dr. Obaid Amin, Ibrahim Jamali, and Zahid Jatoi, where panelists shared insights on Pakistan’s market challenges and opportunities, from trade to sustainable practices. Following another break, Eugene Nizeyimana of the African Business Chamber (AfBC) and Rose Smalley-Gordon from Womble Bond Dickinson (UK) LLP emphasized the importance of legal frameworks in supporting international trade. The event concluded with a networking lunch. It was also great to reconnect with familiar faces, including David Heathcote. Thank you to the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Alex Wright and all speakers for this inspiring platform. Today’s discussions reaffirmed the potential for UK-Pakistan collaboration.
