About us

We are Yorkshire’s cancer charity, helping the people of Yorkshire avoid and survive cancer. Our vision is that every single person in every community in and around Yorkshire has the very best chance of living a long and healthy life with, without and beyond cancer. Our goal is to ensure that by 2025, at least 2,000 fewer people in Yorkshire will die from cancer every year. 583 people are diagnosed with cancer every week in Yorkshire, and people in Yorkshire are more likely to get cancer, and more likely to die from it, than most other counties in England. There are many reasons for this, including social deprivation, post-industrialisation and lifestyle choices. But there are also clear disparities in the availability of healthcare services and inequalities accessing early diagnostics, clinical trials and the latest treatments. We have committed to investing £100m over the next 10 years to tackle the region’s biggest cancer problems. We will work in partnership with researchers, scientists and clinicians, the NHS, Public Health bodies and other charities to make life-changing improvements to cancer outcomes in Yorkshire. We are a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) - an organisation of the leading medical and health research charities in the UK.

Updates

  • Findings from the RURALLY study, funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research, could inform innovative new ways of supporting people to see their GP with symptoms of cancer 🔍 More than 700 people took part in the trial, which was one of the first ever studies to examine reasons why people in rural areas are less likely to survive cancer. Poor relationships with GPs, concern about losing time from work, and cultural beliefs around ‘not making a fuss’ are some of the factors identified.

  • Exciting news for South Yorkshire 📣 The Active Together service, which has already supported more than 1,000 people in Sheffield and Harrogate, is now available to people with cancer in Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster. Active Together offers free, personalised fitness, nutrition and wellbeing support to help people with cancer prepare for, respond to, and recover after treatment. The programme’s expansion marks an important step towards achieving the charity’s goal for everyone with a cancer diagnosis in Yorkshire to be able to benefit from these services. • 🔍 FOxTROT3 is an international clinical trial exploring whether giving specific groups of patients a course of chemotherapy before surgery can help improve cancer outcomes. David from Leeds is among those who have taken part in the trial, following his diagnosis with bowel cancer in 2023. Now, after seeing the benefits of research, David is joining our call for the government to commit to a long-term strategy for cancer. 💬 “As someone who has benefitted from a clinical trial funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research, I believe it is very important that more people with cancer in Yorkshire are given the opportunity to take part in research which could help improve their treatment and quality of life. “There also needs to be more education around how to get tested for cancer and how to spot symptoms, including those which are less common.” Join David by adding your voice 👇 https://lnkd.in/e6Y-YTUP
