"Given the complexity of determining age, and the serious consequences if a decision is wrong, we need a return to the established principle and practice of only conducting age assessments when there is a significant reason to doubt a young person's age" Thank you to Electronic Immigration Network for sharing our latest report on age disputes - co-written with Immigration Social Work Services and the Public Law Project - and featuring this important quote from the report. https://lnkd.in/eGweJt_A

Since B first came to Young Roots and accessed our Casework service, we have seen a remarkable change in his wellbeing and social networks. A year ago, he struggled to retain information and could not face the prospect of sitting in a classroom trying to learn - but now he feels ready to go to college to improve his English 💪

"The UK’s broken legal aid system is pushing many asylum seekers through their asylum claims without representation, resulting in poor decisions and increased trauma for vulnerable people." Every day at Young Roots we work with young people forced to navigate a high stakes process without legal representation. Everyone should have access to justice - legal aid rates (which have not increased since 1996) must be raised, urgently. https://lnkd.in/gtP-uyQG

Young women from our activities across London recently came together through our residential. The group discussed what they enjoyed about our Young Women’s groups, how they had grown together, and what they would like to do more of at our activities - as well cooking, canoeing, arts and crafts, games and enjoying a campfire together!

    Chief Executive, Young Roots

Wow! One year at Young Roots! And what a year it has been. We have: - Worked directly with 1327 young people since I started, through the beautiful chaos at our nine weekly youth clubs and our life-changing casework service - Endured a crisis which saw a 600% increase in refugee homelessness and through which we supported countless young people facing street homelessness - Coped with the heartbreak of a huge spike in mental health needs amongst the young people who use our services - Reassured and advised young people who were worried their lives would be torn apart again by implementation of the Rwanda plan and/or being forced to move to Bibby Stockholm. - Made emergency plans to keep young people and staff safe as racist riots threatened young people’s accommodation and our offices and youth clubs - Agreed a new policy and campaigns strategy, so that we can work with young people to change the cruel asylum system and started to meet MPs, councilors, and others to make the case for a different approach - Published three reports, drawing on our direct experience working with young people everyday, to show how poor age disputes are traumatising young people and denying children protection, and started to work with social workers, local authorities and others to fix this. - Developed a new organizational strategy, setting out our ambitions to ensure young people who are navigating the asylum system have a lawyer (not too much to ask, you’d think), that they can access mental health support and are able to pursue their hopes and dreams, among other things! - Welcomed important new funders and supporters to the Young Roots community - Strengthened our partnerships with the many amazing organisations who work with us to meet young people’s needs - Celebrated our 20th anniversary at a beautiful event  - Moved into new offices in Brent and King's Cross And much, much more… The team does some really impressive work to evaluate the impact of our work at Young Roots, and the thing that ALWAYS comes through from young people, is the sense of community and family you can feel in our services. It hasn't been easy but it has been wonderful. I am so so lucky that through it all, I’ve been lifted up by the Young Roots community, including our amazing team of staff, trustees, volunteers, partners, funders - a team full of unbelievable talent – and the inspiring young people who come to Young Roots. And by the beauty of what I see around me every day. Young Roots
