We are joining Disabled Peoples' Organisations and calling for the Scottish Government to prioritise the needs of disabled people in Scotland. Disabled young women face significant marginalisation and have been systematically failed by a lack of plans and actions to address poverty and inequalities in Scotland. In our most recent research report, we found that disabled young women are unable to cover the cost of living because of rising costs linked to their disability. Disabled young women are facing an unprecedented decline in living standards, an issue that will only continue to get worse without immediate intervention. Disabled young women feel they have been forgotten in Government priorities and plans. Now is the time to introduce inclusive policies that consider gender and disability together. At The Young Women’s Movement, we stand beside Disabled People Led Organisations to demand justice and equality for disabled people. Read about the three key asks here and join us to support: https://lnkd.in/eGqjxssF #DisabledPeopleDemandJustice

We have 4 new Trustees! 🎉 We're thrilled to have Áine Beattie, Christina Sinclair, Amanda Amaeshi and Hannah Gould joining our Board to help govern and guide us as we re-imagine Scotland for young women and girls 💚 Meet the new Trustees: 🕊️ Áine Beattie is a motivated intersectional feminist, and her varied fundraising and voluntary work is driven by these values. She has served on our Advisory Collective since October 2023, and is delighted to join the Board and continue to champion gender equality in Scotland and beyond. Since graduating in International Relations from University of Edinburgh, specialising in gender, peace, and security, Áine has worked in fundraising, and is currently based at Samaritans. Áine is Secretary for the Scottish Branch of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, the world's oldest feminist peace organisation, and has represented WILPF at the United Nations in Vienna and New York as a feminist advocate. She is also the incumbent Chair of the Child Protection Committee for The SSC. 📢 Hannah Gould is originally from Texas and moved to Scotland to pursue her Master's in Strategic Communications and Public Relations at Queen Margaret University. She went on to use her comms knowledge and skills to focus on combatting the spread of child sexual abuse and exploitation globally and is now at The Promise Scotland supporting the change needed for care experienced children, young people and families to thrive. Hannah believes deeply in the urgent need for intersectional equality. She is excited to be a small part in building a Scotland and a world where young women's and girls’ needs and rights are fully met. ⚖️ Amanda Amaeshi is a British Nigerian activist, campaigner, and writer specialising in gender equality, anti-racism, and youth political participation. She is a Young Spokesperson for Girlguiding Scotland and serves on the First Minister’s National Advisory Council on Women and Girls (NACWG). Currently in her final year of LLB Law at University College London, Amanda critically engages with the law’s role in addressing human rights and social justice. For her writing and campaigning, she was named on our own 30 Under 30 list and as the Glasgow Times Young Scotswoman of the Year 2020. 🏛️ Christina Sinclair (MSc MA BArch IHBC) is the Director of Edinburgh World Heritage – the independent charity dedicated to the proactive conservation of our beautiful city, for the benefit of all. From studying architecture on Edinburgh’s Chambers Street and a Masters in European Urban Conservation, through years in leadership dedicated to positively and proactively managing change in historic places, she is a passionate ambassador for the value of female leadership and wellbeing. She was also a voluntary UN Women UK Delegate for the 68th session of the Commission on the Status of Women.

Closing on 25 October, so we’re into the last couple of weeks to get your voices heard and ideas put forward on improving human rights education, access and advocacy in Scotland for girls and young women. The data collected through this survey will inform YWM’s 2024/25 report on young women’s rights and the barriers they face to realise them; and how we can continue to hold decision-makers to account, particularly following the incorporation of UNCRC earlier this year.
📢 Status of Young Women in Scotland is back for 2024-25! We’re focusing on young women’s rights in Scotland. 🗣️ The young women involved in our movement told us that they want: - a better understanding of their own human rights - how they might access high-quality, evidence-based information when they feel their rights may have been breached, violated, or ignored. 📊 As part of our new research, we’re hosting a survey exploring the state of young women's rights in Scotland in 2024, and we want to hear from you! ➡️ Respond to or share our survey by Friday 25th October: https://lnkd.in/eAKup5mw ➡️ Read a new blog by our Research & Policy Lead, Dr Rebecca Mason, who discusses why this topic is so important in Scotland today: https://lnkd.in/ekFWjCZU #SYWS24

Great piece by Karin Goodwin in The Sunday National/The Ferret today- many thanks for reaching out to The Young Women's Movement to get our perspective. As I discussed with Karin, much more needs to be done to tackle the rise of misogyny amongst young men in Scotland. At The Young Women's Movement, we stand alongside young men to mutually champion gender equality and as feminist allies in this space. My latest report for Upgrading Women on the The Young Women's Movement ' Young Women Lead 2024 Programme and Report.
The future is female!💪 Celebrating the impactful work of the 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 programme and its influence on young women’s democratic wellbeing in Scotland. On Thursday, 26 September, our contributor, Muminah K., had the incredible opportunity to attend The Young Women's Movement (YWL24) Celebration at the Scottish Parliament, marking the end of the YWL24 programme and the launch of the official report on young women's democratic wellbeing in Scotland🌍✨ The impact of the Young Women's Movement (YWM) has been profound, inspiring young women to engage in politics and develop essential leadership skills. This year's cohort focused on enhancing political participation through three key areas: trust in society, participatory democracy, and online behaviours. Here are three key takeaways from Muminah's experience: 1. Your voice matters! Never underestimate the impact you can have as an individual. Every contribution counts. 2. Politics is for everyone. Regardless of your background, there’s a space for you in political discourse—your voice deserves to be heard. 3. Step outside your comfort zone. Embracing new opportunities can lead to transformative experiences. A huge thank you to Muminah for sharing this amazing event which empowers women in politics!💗 Shout out to the 𝗬𝗪𝗟24 participants, to the 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻'𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 staff the YWM mentors, Saffron Roberts, Marie-Lou Chauvin, and guest speakers from the Scottish Youth Parliament, Elect Her CIC, Carnegie UK, and Muminah's fellow YWL24 participants. Let’s continue to inspire change together!✨ You can read the YWL24 report here: https://lnkd.in/gsDD94p2 #YoungWomenLead #YWL24 #WomenInPolitics #Empowerment #DemocraticWellbeing #YoungWomensRights #PoliticalParticipation #WomenInLeadership #YouthEngagement #WomensVoices #EqualityDiversityAndInclusion

🆕️ #CostOfLiving Research “Due to the cost of living, I’ve given up hope of ever having children... As a young, single, childless woman who works full time I feel that everything is an uphill struggle. Life isn’t worth living for me.” A harrowing but important read in our new The Young Women's Movement & Scottish Women's Budget Group research report into young women's experiences of the cost of living crisis. Young women are being failed across Scotland, struggling to cover their most basic living costs and left with stress and worry about their futures. We implore the Scottish and UK Governments to seriously consider the recommendations made by this report. #Research #YoungWomen #FinancialWellbeing #CostOfLiving
It’s #ChallengePoverty Week 2024, and young women in Scotland are feeling trapped due to the rising cost of living. In our latest research, we partnered with the Scottish Women's Budget Group to ask young women in Scotland about their experiences of the cost-of-living crisis, and here’s what we found out: 📉 65.7% of young women surveyed told us that felt financially worse-off compared to this time last year. 🏠 32.7% currently find their housing costs unaffordable. 🍝 74.2% of young women are cutting back on food expenditure by limiting the types of food they buy, and nearly 1 in 4 have skipped meals due to the rising cost of living. 👕 26.7% of young mothers are unable to afford replacement clothes or shoes for their children, and 66.7% are unable to afford replacement clothes and shoes for themselves. 🧠 70.6% of young women told us that rising costs have impacted their mental health and wellbeing. What can we do about it? Read the findings and recommendations in our new report: https://lnkd.in/eaViV_sx #CPW24
