Youth Justice Board for England and Wales (YJB)
Government Administration
We are a non-departmental public body responsible for overseeing the youth justice system in England and Wales.
About us
Our vision is for a youth justice system that sees children as children, treats them fairly and helps them to build on their strengths so they can make a constructive contribution to society. This will prevent offending and create safer communities with fewer victims. From 2020 to 2021, our strategic objectives are to: - strengthen and enhance the delivery of our statutory functions - see a youth justice system that sees children as children first, and offenders second - see an improvement in the standards of custody for children and promote further rollout of constructive resettlement - influence the youth justice system to treat children fairly and reduce over-representation - see a reduction in serious youth violence and child criminal exploitation

Just have to give a big shout out to Minister Heidi Alexander MP not only for the important work she is doing within her role at Ministry of Justice UK But also the work she did previously as MP, Councillor and Deputy Mayor in Lewisham. Everyone knows I’m a proud south Londoner from Lewisham so it’s great to reconnect with others who love the blue borough. Considering the passion I have for changing the lives of children and young people, I was great to be introduced to Sir Nic Dakin MP and briefly discuss why I’m so motivated to be a Board Member Youth Justice Board for England and Wales (YJB)

HM Inspectorate of Probation’s thematic inspection report explores the experiences of Black and Mixed Heritage boys in the youth justice system and is an important read. 📰 The report suggests early intervention is crucial to prevent more Black and Mixed Heritage boys from entering the system. ⚖ Many of the boys in the inspected cases faced multiple disadvantages. 60% of those who had received a court sentence had been excluded from school, half had faced racial discrimination in their life, a third had been victims of criminal exploitation and 25% had a disability. Many of these children are only receiving support with these needs for the first time through the criminal justice system. HM Inspectorate of Probation makes several recommendations to improve services for Black and Mixed heritage boys. 📑 Read the report ⤵ https://lnkd.in/eT9Tv74X #YouthJustice #BlackHistoryMonthUK

I attended my first All Staff Event today at the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales (YJB). We covered mental health, change and future focusing, and our approach to becoming an anti racist organisation. It was brilliant. A full day of shared passion, expertise and empathy. On #WorldMentalHealthDay, I’m feeling very fortunate to work for a company with such a healthy working culture.

We've commissioned Crest Advisory to carry out some research on operationalising Child First. As part of this research, they want to find out about youth justice practitioners' experiences of Child First. 💜 If you work for a youth justice service, please ask your Head of Service for the survey link to share your views! 💭 #YouthJustice #ChildFirst #Survey #Research

The Youth Justice Board for England and Wales (YJB) has commissioned Crest Advisory to conduct research to understand how the Child First principles are understood and applied across Youth Justice Services in England and Wales. Earlier this year we published research exploring how pre-sentence reports (PSRs) are used to inform sentencing decisions in the youth justice system. The report makes some useful recommendations and also considers how PSRs might contribute to racial disparity in sentencing decisions. 📝 Learn more ⤵ https://lnkd.in/esPVvVvh #BlackHistoryMonthUK #YouthJustice #BlackHistoryMonth

As we mark Black History Month, it's important to recognise both the progress made and the work still needed to combat systemic inequalities in our justice system. YJB annual statistics show: 📉 The number of Black children in custody has decreased by 9% compared to the year ending March 2022 - the largest decrease of any ethnicity 📉 Black first-time entrants to the youth justice system have dropped by 8%, the most significant fall among all ethnicities 👮♂️ Black children account for 11% of all children cautioned or sentenced compared with 6% of the 10-17 population 🔎 Black children were involved in 20% of stop and searches - the only ethnic group to be overrepresented compared with the 10-17 population. While some of these numbers are encouraging and reflect the collective efforts towards a more equitable youth justice system, there is still a long way to go. This Black History Month, let's celebrate the progress but also commit to continued change, policy reform, and partnership to address racial disparity. Together, we can create a future where our children are supported, not disproportionately penalised. 💜 Find out more in the youth justice statistics ⤵ https://lnkd.in/eRFaP3xm #BlackHistoryMonth #YouthJustice #BlackHistoryMonthUK
