With the budget announced earlier this week, this month's Digital Government News features a special focus on the Treasury's announcement, alongside our regular digital government updates. On the budget… Chancellor Rachel Reeves emphasised the important role technology will play in improving productivity and efficiency. “Today we are setting a 2% productivity, efficiency and savings target for all departments to meet next year by using technology more effectively and joining up services across government,” she said. The budget document says the government is developing a “strategic plan for a more efficient and effective civil service,” including through "improving skills and harnessing digital technology to drive better outcomes for public services.” The budget emphasised the role of The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, which now incorporates CDDO and GDS, with £80 million investment to support the “transformation of corporate functions across government, to deliver more efficient, cost‑effective and modern systems as part of government’s Shared Services Strategy.” It adds: "DSIT will continue to drive towards a renewed strategy for digital transformation across the public sector to ensure that fundamental reforms in public services are prioritised and digital-led. This will inform a centralised and coherent approach to digital investment at phase 2 of the spending review. Here are some other things we noticed in the budget: - A Digital Transformation Roadmap is coming in spring 2025 for HMRC to make the department a 'digital-first organisation." The government will modernise the department's IT and data systems to improve productivity and the user experience of the systems. - NHS will see £2 billion allocated for technology and digital improvements to increase productivity. The health service will focus on transitioning “from analogue to digital” over the next decade. - An additional £340m to the UK intelligence community for digital transformation, infrastructure, and R&D - Government will publish an Artificial Intelligence Opportunities Action Plan, with a roadmap to “capture the opportunities of AI to enhance growth and productivity and better deliver services for the public." - DWP will continue to collaborate with other government departments such as HMRC, the Home Office and DSIT to strengthen data sharing further and explore new data innovations to tackle fraud and error - Creation of a new National Data Library to unlock the full value of public data assets. - A new Regulatory Innovation Office will seek to reduce the burden of red tape and speed up access to new technologies to improve people’s daily lives and unlock growth opportunities. - £52m will be used to digitise the inheritance tax service from 2027-28. - There will be investment into the digital transformation of land ownership records.    Check out and rest of the newsletter!

Hey everyone! 👋 I’ve just come back from the Scrum Alliance Global Scrum Gathering in Stockholm. Between workshops, keynotes, and the chance to connect with agile minds from all over the world, my notebook (and mind) are full of insights. Whether you’re new to agile or have been living it for years, there were some powerful themes and takeaways that can really impact how we work and grow as a team. Head over to our blog on the Zaizi website where I’ve distilled my top learnings from the conference https://lnkd.in/eNX73DYY

Helping public sector organisations realise the full potential of digital technologies, for them and their customers and clients

Chancellor Rachel Reeves delivered her first Budget under the Labour Chancellor Rachel Reeves delivered her first Budget under the Labour Government - the first Labour Budget in 14 years - highlighting a crucial focus on public sector reform and growth. "Today we are setting a 2% productivity, efficiency and savings target for all departments to meet next year by using technology more effectively and joining up services across government" Analysis of the budget documents reveals the role technology will play in transforming public services. Phase 2 of the Spending Review will focus on ensuring the public sector makes the best use of technology to digitise public service delivery, enhance productivity and improve outcomes. The message is clear: Government needs to accelerate digital delivery, drive productivity and realise efficiencies. In my recent DigiLeaders webinar, I discussed strategies for government organisations to deliver digital projects more efficiently and cost-effectively. I showed that by adopting an agile, user-centric, and continuous improvement approach, you can quickly build digital services, join up services to reduce duplication, make savings and improve public service outcomes. Making the UK the best and safest place to live and work

At a time when threats to the UK’s national security are intensifying and diversifying, Zaizi are pleased to see the chancellor’s announcement in the autumn budget of an additional £340m to the UK intelligence community to enable digital transformation, core infrastructure and research and development. This is in addition to £2.9bn in new funding announced for the UK Ministry of Defence and £3bn in annual commitments in trade finance and other material support to Ukraine. With hostile state actors being increasingly assertive and acting together in an attempt to reshape the world order - the intelligence community are facing unprecedented pressure to adapt to the volatile, contested and uncertain global landscape. At Zaizi, we recognise the need for rapid innovation in the public sector and work to enable disruptive emerging technologies and modernise ageing and inflexible legacy IT processes and infrastructure - driving efficiency to keep pace with the threats. We recently were part of a consortium of experts sourced via the Accelerated Capability Environment (ACE) community to collaborate with Border Force and other partners in exploring the potential of AI and ML techniques in various border security challenges. We took a bold approach to the project, targeting the broadest possible range of use cases for AI at the border — using computer vision and anomaly detection to automate processes. Our proof of concept models demonstrated how AI could add significant value to an already-effective operational environment and drive further efficiencies.
