Last week, Dr Denise Lee, Tina Marolt Cebasek, and I had the pleasure of accompanying our Master’s level Civil Engineering Liverpool John Moores University students on an educational trip that highlighted sustainable construction practices and innovative engineering solutions. During our trip, we visited EMR Reusable Steels in Coventry, UK. Business Developer Mike Hogan TMCIWM MBA and Technical Lead Harrison Hurst provided an engaging and informative presentation, offering insights into metal recycling procedures and particularly into the reuse of structural steel. EMR has obtained the world's first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its reusable steel product which creates 97.5 percent less carbon emissions than conventional steel products (47kgCO2e per tonne compared with the World Steel Association’s global average for steelmaking of 1,850kgCO2e). The students had the opportunity to observe dismantled steel members from decommissioned structures at EMR’s yard and learned about the rigorous processes involved, including assessment, precise digital measurement, removal of extraneous materials like stiffeners and studs, and the creation of a product's "passport”, ensuring the materials meet reuse standards for new structures.
