Our Chief Compliance Officer, Sophie Bowler, and Head of First Line Financial Crime Prevention, Aaron Debattista, had the pleasure of speaking at The Financial Crime Summit in London last week, which brought together top practitioners from world-leading banks, financial institutions, regulators, and solution-providers to discuss the future of combatting financial crime. Sophie was featured on a panel session focusing on how to prepare digital asset and crypto currency regulations for effective financial crime prevention, where the discussion explored: ➡ Whether existing financial crime control frameworks are effective for digital asset firms and their products. ➡ The appropriateness of existing AML regulations for digital asset firms, with particular focus on the Travel Rule Regulations. ➡ How banks can ensure they can appropriately identify, mitigate and manage their exposure to crypto and digital assets. Leading a roundtable on the impact of crypto-currency and digital assets on financial crime, Aaron then took participants on a deep dive into what this means, coving key points including: ⚫ Traditional financial institutions are still struggling to effectively understand the risks they are exposed to through digital assets, and as a result are both significantly over-estimating their risk and, at the same time, not properly assessing or mitigating it. ⚫ Digital assets are now an integral part of the market, and the wider financial services industry needs better education as to what the impact of that is.
