Do contact me by message if you would like to be in contact with the organiser.  BEGINS It’s time to try something new in the hunt for young cyber talent, do you as employers want to be part of this scheme?   Natural cyber aptitude can be found in unexpected places, when you really look. Like in those who think differently, see things that others miss, and are naturally suited for the cyber sector. But missed out or miscategorised by the system, this tech-talent is currently being left to fall through the cracks, when it should really be filling the gaps.   That’s what The Gloucestershire Cyber Launchpad (GCL) is all about.   Supported by Cynam, GCL is a collection of responsible, open-minded, and forward-thinking cyber employers who are ready to try something different. Recognising the hidden talent in the system, GCL employers will offer Cyber Security Degree Apprenticeships to those gifted individuals currently left out – including young people who are neurodivergent and those who would otherwise miss out on higher education opportunities.    As the educational provider in this scheme, University of Gloucestershire talent scouts are working with schools and communities to identify candidates for these apprentice roles. GCL employers will then be able to interview and hire candidates who meet their skills requirements and organisational needs.   Once apprentices are recruited, we will work closely with each employer to support and nurture the unique skills, characters, and abilities of these young adults – as well as deliver taught content associated with the apprenticeship.   Does this opportunity sound of interest, do you want to talk over further,message me and I can link you into the team. #cynam #University of Gloucestershire

Great to see a ‘Cyber Security and Resilience Bill’ announced by the new Labour government in the King’s speech yesterday. Yet, I worry when reading the text: ‘This Bill will fill an immediate gap in our defences and prevent […] attacks […] such as the recent ransomware attack impacting London hospitals [the Synnovis breach].’ Firstly, a bill doesn’t fill a gap - when (and if) passed it is a starting gun. Cyber security takes a long-time, claims of immediacy are misleading. Secondly, to suggest additional regulation will prevent similar attacks experienced to Synnovis is not accurate. It may, in time, help to reduce risk, but this language suggests a direct line of causation between a bill and complete protection. This is not credible. We need to be really careful with setting expectations, and the language we use in this field. There are no magic solutions. We need regulatory evolutions, but please, let’s be realistic about what is achievable. Hopefully, as further details emerge we will see more calibrated language that delivers positive change whilst being transparent about likely outcomes. Details on page 94 https://lnkd.in/eqdJG_NW

Ironically, I’ve just finished giving a talk in London about cybersecurity and patient safety. Here’s what I said… 1. We need mandatory supply chain audits in the NHS 2. We need to block market access for NHS IT suppliers that don’t comply with audits OR don’t meet standards (that includes ALL types of suppliers - cyber, infrastructure and health IT) 3. NHS standards and regulations need actual enforcement And last but not least here was my warning: 4. If we fail to regulate then we better be ready to litigate! 🚨 Join the Cyber-Deception Revolution 🌐 The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is embarking on a groundbreaking initiative! They've called for UK firms to deploy cyber-deception technologies at scale to assess their effectiveness. This ambitious plan aims to establish an evidence base for the use of such technologies as part of the Active Cyber Defence 2.0 initiative, driving the future of cybersecurity in our nation. 🔍 Ollie Whitehouse, CTO of the NCSC, highlighted two standout use cases: "digital tripwires" and "honeytokens" for early threat detection, and low- and high-interaction honeypots for collecting invaluable threat intelligence. With a target to deploy 5,000 solutions on the UK internet, including 200,000 in cloud environments and 20,000 internally, this initiative is poised to be a game-changer. The key questions? How effective are these technologies in detecting threats, and how do they influence threat actor behaviour? If your organization has already implemented these solutions, the NCSC is urging you to participate. Last week, King Charles introduced a pivotal bill for the Tech sector at the opening of the UK Parliament: 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐲𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐥𝐥. *Salaries & Spending Priorities in Security* The NHS & Defence spending are big talking points here in the UK as we ramp up to the election, yet this major story has got little to no traction nationally? From a recruitment perspective one of the issues around the public sector is one shared by a lot of those in the private sector currently... pay. Specifically salaries and the short termism that surrounds these decisions. I once worked with one of the UK’s 5 great offices of state on hiring contractors for thier security programme. The permanent CISO was on around £65K as per civil service salary banding (I know not all of them are). The de-facto deputy who was contracting and running the re-org? Over £1,000 per day. The contracters going in? £450 - £550. The money was there, the allocation of it? Mindboggling. I don’t even want to think about what the total consultancy spend was. It’s a false economy at play. It always seems very expensive to pay good salaries (sector will dictate what good looks like). But it’s always more expensive to hire cheap, or poorly and have to clean up afterwards! (To be clear there’s absolutely a place for top consultants and contract talent!) I feel incredibly sorry for the NHS teams affected here in this story because there is no way they are properly resourced to cope with the aftermath of a state-sponsored attack. This is much less pronounced in the US as well (though UK - US salary comparison is whole other discussion). So what’s the answer? Higher salaries (Very politically controversial in a cost of living crisis) A more centralised UK Cyber Security function under the MOD or GCHQ as part of a national defence strategy? Increased remote work to hire more senior candidates in more remote locations or to better attract more technical talent in general? Innovative solutions on a postcard please (Increased personal allowance, ability to allocate more pension to salary?) More pertinent to the private sector (though pay is an issue in some cases!) is talent pipeline and tenure in role, but more on that tomorrow. https://lnkd.in/eZSUMmvY #securitybreach #cybersecurity #ukcyber #informationsecurity

How do we make it easier for people to navigate their Cyber Security careers in the UK? 🤔 Wouldn't it be great for companies to adopt a version of the UK Cyber Security Council's "cyber careers framework"? This would provide standardisation and simplicity to cyber career pathways, instead of the massive variations we currently see across the industry. Such an approach could drastically improve how companies advertise roles, attract the best talent and help employees understand routes of progression. Current job descriptions often contain too many requirements for one person to deliver and are a mixture of specialisations rather than providing a clear focus. By moving towards a common recognised framework that includes the 16 specialisations listed by the council, we can help individuals start and advance their careers more effectively. Wouldn't that be lovely! Hope to see that this will be one of the recommendations from the review of standards and pathways in the Cyber profession due by 2025. #CyberSecurity #CareerPathways #UKCyberSecurityCouncil #SkillsFramework #CareerDevelopment #Standardisation
