Yesterday, I swapped my desk for WIRED Health 2025, diving into a day of interesting talks, firesides and debates. From AMR to AI-driven drug discovery, here are some key takeaways: 🦠 AMR isn’t a future problem – it’s happening now. Over 36 million lives have been lost since 1990, and healthcare costs could rise by $150bn a year if no decisive action is taken. But for every $1 invested in AMR, there’s a $24 return. The message? Act now. ⏳ Ageing might not be inevitable. Research on torpor states in mice suggests slowing ageing could be possible. Stressful events accelerate biological ageing, while epigenetic clocks offer ways to track and understand the process. 🤖 AI + genetics = a power couple. We don’t fully understand human biology, but AI can help bridge the gaps and speed up timelines in drug development. Companies need to rethink how they innovate to keep up. 🔬 Microbiome science is evolving fast. As much as 90% of it is influenced by diet and lifestyle, yet misconceptions still linger. The challenge? Cutting through the noise to unlock evidence-backed insights. ⚖️ Rethinking diagnosis. Early detection may not always be the answer – some cancers never progress, and could over-diagnosis do more harm than good? The focus should be on personalised, preventative medicine. 💉 Could vaccines stop cancer coming back? The next generation of mRNA vaccines are on the horizon. These could train the immune system to recognise and fight a patient’s specific cancer, potentially preventing relapse. A fascinating day full of insights enjoyed alongside Evgenia Koutsouki, PhD! #WIREDHealth
