A #GOSH world first in gene therapy! A baby boy born with a rare condition has become the first in the world to be treated with a new, potentially lifechanging, investigational gene therapy on a clinical trial at GOSH. 14-month-old Tomas was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition which causes ammonia to build up in the blood. This causes serious side effects as it is toxic, especially to the brain. Tomas took part in the OTC-HOPE clinical trial and received the gene therapy last year via an infusion into his liver cells. Since receiving the treatment, he has made good progress. Mum Mariana said: “We're so pleased Tomas was able to have the gene therapy - it's been incredible.” 💙 Find out more: https://bit.ly/4l1cUvB #GOSH #GeneTherapy #ClinicalTrials

Recently, a #UAE delegation, led by Professor Maha Barakat, Assistant Minister of Medical Affairs and Life Sciences at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had the privilege of visiting young Emirati patients at #GOSH. In the spirit of Ramadan, the visit was filled with joy, special gifts, and heartfelt wishes for a swift recovery, bringing comfort and hope to the children and their families. This thoughtful gesture is a reflection of the UAE’s unwavering commitment to improving children’s healthcare, strengthened by the Zayed Centre for Research into Rare Disease in Children — a legacy made possible through the generosity and vision of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak. #ZCR #GOSHInternational

This World Kidney Day, we’re reflecting on an extraordinary achievement in paediatric renal care at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).💫 Aditi's story is nothing short of groundbreaking. Just over a year ago, she became the first child in the #UK and #NHS to come off immunosuppressants one month after her kidney transplant. This was made possible through a pioneering approach where Aditi received her mother’s bone marrow to reprogram her immune system, enabling her body to accept the donor kidney without rejection. This incredible milestone was the result of the relentless dedication of GOSH’s Renal Transplantation team, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of specialists from Dialysis, Bone Marrow Transplant, Paediatric Intensive Care, Immunology, Surgery, and Anaesthesia. Their teamwork demonstrates the power of collective expertise in transforming paediatric care. Professor Stephen Marks, Clinical Lead for Renal Transplantation at #GOSH, shares: “In 25 years of practice, this is the first time I’ve cared for a patient who has not required immunosuppression after a transplant. We hope our research will offer a life-changing option for more children like Aditi.” With support from the National Institute for Health and Care Research and Kidney Research UK, the Renal Transplantation team is pioneering research into biomarkers that can detect kidney rejection before it occurs, which promises earlier interventions and improved outcomes for transplant patients. Aditi’s progress is a testament to the future of paediatric renal care and the impact of research-driven innovation. Today, she’s thriving, enjoying activities like singing, dancing, and sports. 🕺👟 Read more about Aditi’s inspiring journey and the groundbreaking work of the Renal Transplantation team here: https://bit.ly/3E49aIx #WorldKidneyDay #RenalTransplant #PaediatricHealthcare #MedicalInnovation #KidneyResearch #Transplantation #HealthcareLeadership #LifeChangingCare #GOSHResearch

40 years ago, on 3rd March 1985, #GOSH surgeons Prof. Lewis Spitz and Mr. Edward Kiely, supported by a team of 26 clinicians, made history with the first-ever separation of conjoined twins. Today, that legacy of innovation and hope continues. 💙✨ Holly, who underwent life-saving surgery as a newborn, recently reunited with the pioneering surgeons who changed her life “I wanted to say thank you to them both, I truly am alive because of them and I know it was a whole different world 40 years ago and things were quite new in this in realm”. Since that landmark operation in 1985, GOSH has cared for 43 sets of conjoined twins, more than any other hospital in the world. From groundbreaking surgical advancements to virtual reality surgical planning, the expertise at GOSH continues to shape the future of care for conjoined twins.
