A team from the Department of Engineering at King's has been awarded a multimillion-pound grant from the Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA) to explore how brain-inspired computing can train artificial intelligence (AI) to be cheaper and more efficient.   To reduce the environmental impact and cost of AI, the ARIA grant will fund Professors Bipin Rajendran, Osvaldo Simeone, and Dr Kai Xu to create new hardware and software solutions to make the training and fine-tuning process more efficient.   Read more: https://lnkd.in/etBtig-U Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences

We welcomed Drew Mayhills FAIM for an illuminating session on artificial intelligence's transformation of education. His visit was part of his Churchill Fellowship where he is investigating the potential for AI to enhance teacher efficiency. Our King's experts engaged in discussions exploring areas such as academic integrity, the (un)changing role of teaching as a result of AI, and the integration of AI in the classroom. We look forward to reading the final report!

What a weekend at New Scientist Live 2024 🙌 🏥 For our fourth iteration of the Hospital of the Future, 150+ staff and student volunteers came together to showcase our work at the UK’s biggest science festival. 🦾 Over 26,000 members of the public visited us over the course of three days, and our stand was full of delighted onlookers from open till close! 👩🔬 As always, the event was an incredible opportunity to bring our research in healthcare tech - surgical robotics, AI, medical imaging and more - and that of our partners at Medtronic, Fraiya Ltd and Ansys to the public who will one day be engaging with this work in clinical settings. It was great to see so many join the CogStack Artificial Intelligence Showcase event today at King's. It brought together top experts in #genomics and #AI from healthcare, academia and industry to discuss key topics in this fast-evolving field. Introduced by Professor Richard Dobson, Professor of Medical Informatics at King's College London and UCL, Co-Founder of CogStack, the programme featured talks on the extraction of information from electronic healthcare records and how clinical data mangement tools can impact real-world applications, as well as a roundtable discussion with industry leaders on the challenges and opportunities of implementing AI in the NHS. The afternoon focused on the use of AI in medicine to support clinicians and patient outcomes, before finishing with a panel of patient representatives on the transformative potential of PPIE. Dr Anwar Alhaq, Genomics Programme Director & CogStack Co-Lead, King's College Hospital, gave his reflections to round up the event: “We've shown this technology is possible on a system-wide scale in southeast London - there’s still milestones to go, but we could do it nationally and internationally. The panel showed that if we want to get industry involved, we have to solve issues around data access, governance and ethics. It was fascinating to see the different ways we’re using AI in medicine, from a population level to a cohort level.
