With the US presidential election a week away, who would China prefer to be leading the USA - Kamala Harris or Donald Trump? Zeno Leoni of the Defence Studies Department discusses this question in our latest edition of King's Poll to Poll. As president, Trump triggered a more assertive China policy which was continued by Biden, and would be unlikely to change under Harris. The difference may lie in Trump's desire to be seen as a deal-maker, and the likelihood that his regime weakens US alliances. Read the full article on Poll to Poll: https://lnkd.in/e_fADaTQ

🌐 Sophie Haspeslagh's research focuses on negotiating with terrorist organisations. 💬 She introduced the term 'linguistic ceasefire' - which calls for recognising the conflict, dropping labels & uncoupling the actor from the act - which is now widely used by governments, NGOs, the United Nations and analysts. 📽 Watch our latest #impact showcase film where Sophie discusses how she developed the concept: https://lnkd.in/eEc2xNNf Department of War Studies

📘 Adults taught in their first language as children have better literacy skills, yet many schools in Africa only teach in English. As a linguist, Dr Ancarno investigated the role that languages play in education in the Gambia. In this new SSPP impact film, Dr Clyde Ancarno discusses how she and partners developed the multilingual toolkit for primary schools in the Gambia. 👨🏫 Working with teachers, she developed resources introducing teachers to the basic principles of multilingual pedagogy, and explored ways to develop resources embracing all the languages spoken by learners. 📽 Watch the film here: https://lnkd.in/eiN_2tD6 This is the first in a series of films where researchers from SSPP discuss how their work has had exceptional impact on society.

Fascinating video on Mexico's new president and her likely approach to reducing income inequality, part of our Poll to Poll series on global elections in 2024 ⬇
Today, Mexico's first female President Claudia Sheinbaum takes office following her leftist party Morena's landslide win in the June elections. In this video, Dr Eduardo Ortiz-Juarez, Lecturer in Development Economics, explains how in its previous term, Morena's agenda to put the poor first led to a significant reduction in poverty and inequality in Mexico. Globally, as inequality within emerging economies such as India, China and Brazil is on the rise, Mexico offers an example of how social policies can tackle this growing problem. 🥇 King's College London was ranked number one for sociology and social policy in the Guardian UK University Guide for 2025. These rankings relate to courses based at the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy: the BA in Global Health & Social Science and BSC in Global Health and Social Medicine, based at the School of Global Affairs, King's College London School of Global Affairs, and the BA Social Sciences, based at the School of Education, Communication & Society. 🎤 Responding to the news Kawsar Tailor, student on the BA Social Sciences, said: "I can see why we have been ranked first in the Guardian University Guide as the course takes on a more impactful approach to learning than I have seen in other universities!" "The course is coproduced by staff and students so that we are not only consuming knowledge from our lecturers but we are also sharing our knowledge and resources with each other as a community in a reciprocated manner. The lecturers and seminar tutors also facilitate and encourage us to apply our learning of theory to contemporary issues outside of the classroom." 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/etWeqjUT
